The funniest thing about racists is the amount of effort they put into showing their capacity for empathy and intelligence on understanding a wide variety of issues.
I’m not saying that racists can’t be smart, but the case we have on hand here doesn’t help my perception.
Let’s go through the facts.
Scared Order for 3 buns is Too Small, Male Indian Friend Help to Buy It Instead
The original post to Facebook on 27 Aug 2019 was already removed, so the next best option is Mothership, who reported on the issue.
Sabira Ariffin wanted to order some fried buns from Fatty Bom Bom at Tampines, but was “scared to order because it’s just fried buns.”
So her male Indian friend then went to buy the buns instead.
When staff from Fatty Bom Bom saw the receipt, they laughed.
Racist Remark Shown Directly on Receipt
And when she took the receipt from her friend, Sabira saw this:
The receipt puts “3bun jee india parekk nakkeling gomblok”, which is a mix of Tamil, Malay and Bahasa Indonesia, that roughly translates to “only 3 buns stupid Indian pariah“.
Pariah are considered low-caste members in India, so this is more than just a racist insult.
The full message on Sabira’s post:
I got my Indian friend to order the fried buns for me cos I really love it but I was too scared to order because it’s just fried buns. I took the receipt from him and saw this. I instantly lost my appetite. I feel so hurt and sad.
What hurts even more was when they were laughing when they saw the receipt from their end. My friend and I really loved your food. Now I can’t even bear to look at it. I’m sorry I ordered only 3 buns. I’m even more sorry that you have such staff.
Fatty Bom Bom’s apology
Fatty Bom Bom’s full apology can be found on their Facebook. They have fired the cashier who wrote the comment and said that they “do not tolerate any rude, insensitive and racism comments within the team.”
Commenters liked the swift responses from Fatty Bom Bom, but were concerned about the other staff laughing along with the joke.
Fatty Bom Bom released another apology on the other staff.
They have checked the CCTV footage, and issued a final warning letter to the staff that were involved. Fatty Bom Bom would also educate them for future services.
Some commenters thought that management had done well, but some reactions were mixed.
Now, to be very clear, we don’t know if the other staff laughing along were doing the kind of laugh my Tinder date who ghosted me later did, or the HAHAHA THIS IS SO FUNNY kind.
In my opinion, management’s follow up on this incident was done well, but that’s for you to judge.
You may have some qualms about the hiring process, but considering that most people don’t want to do F&B service, perhaps this was to be expected on employee quality.
Why I think Sabira Shouldn’t be Sorry
Fried buns are awesome and don’t let anybody judge you for the things you love. Cheap food doesn’t mean bad food.
I started the article talking about the racist cashier not being smart, but reviewing the facts, I think he/she might secretly be a comedian pretending to be a racist for a docu-reality show.
Here’s some of the evidence:
Evidence 1: Writing it directly on the receipt
I can only assume that this was a 200 IQ move, as in the cashier actually wanted to be fired. Surely someone can’t be that short-sighted to not understand that showing the insult directly to the person can backfire pretty badly?
Evidence 2: The way the 3 buns insult was written
From how the cashier judges the 3 buns order, this shows a failure to understand these things:
- Different dietary needs or preferences of people
- Food pricing is a result of many factors, including geological and market ones, and cheap food does not mean bad food
- Food wastage is a problem that’s exacerbated by such opinions
- The buns must be real damn nice
…among other things.
Evidence 3: Receipt written in a mix of language, but the cashier doesn’t seem to realise it
The words used in the insult was written in a mix of Tamil, Malay and Bahasa Indonesia. What this indicates is that the cashier writing this clearly understood that the world consists of a variety of races and it is made culturally richer by their interactions.
Yet, the implication of the message sounds like what someone who thinks a 7 billion population is equivalent to the number 7,000,000 would say. Last I checked, average IQ levels are supposed to be rising.
I know, I know, those are very subtle hints at the true intelligence behind the remarks.
There’s probably a secret camera somewhere, and I’ll be waiting for the the docu-reality show on racism and how society handles it on YouTube.
