There are many reasons for a divorce. According to a study, the top five reasons for divorces are as follow:
- Lack of commitment
- Infidelity or extramarital affairs
- Too much conflict and arguing
- Getting married too young
- Financial problems
But this couple, who’s been married for a whopping 45 years, divorced for a reason that’s definitely not even in the top 1,000 reasons:
S’porean Divorced His Wife of 45 Years ‘Coz Wife Kept Too Many Cats at Home
A 67-year-old woman is appealing a decision to dissolve her marriage.
And the reason for her 70-year-old husband’s filing for the divorce?
Too many cats.
Well, kind of.
The couple had married back in May 1975 and have three children.
Friction between the couple started in 1997, when the wife woke up one day and said that “her late mother had appeared to her in dreams, telling her to be kind to cats.”
She believed that doing so would pave the way to paradise, and also protect her family (from what, no one knows).
From then on, she began to be obsessed with cats and would go around feeding community cats.
No issue there, right? We’re all obsessed with cats. Just look at Ginger here:
But shit hit the fan when their youngest child brought back a kitten, and from then on, the wife started to bring back many cats to their house to keep.
It’s not revealed how many of these furry adorable creatures were brought back, but it got so bad that the husband had to sleep on the floor because the bed was “constantly defiled”.
Also, a maid had to be engaged to take care of the cats.

But the cat obsession didn’t just stay in Singapore.
The couple has rented a home in JB which also housed many cats, and for some reason, the couple’s daughter was the one who engaged a maid to look after the cats.

And well, keeping these cats require lots of money, and that actually bankrupted the wife.
Literally.
Withdrew Pension Funds for…Something
In 2004, after the husband received a $500,000 pension fund, the wife withdrew a large amount of the fund.
It’s unknown where she spent it on, though.
However, back then, the wife was fined for not paying wages to her domestic worker, and she was also declared bankrupt.

I wonder how those cats are doing now.
The judge said that the marriage had indeed “irretrievably due to the wife’s behaviour and their separation.”
He then “approved” the divorce, adding, “There is no possibility of reconciliation. There are no minor children. For these reasons, it is just and reasonable to grant a judgment to dissolve the marriage.”
And by the way, if you’re still wondering why stuff like this kept on happening overseas, allow me to remind you that this happened in Singapore.
No wonder people claim that cats are the real Sovereigns of the world.
