Unless you’re a Liverpool fan or the coronavirus, there’s not been much to smile about in 2020.

The year has simultaneously felt like the longest and shortest year ever.

And if you’ve been glued to your phone, endlessly doomscrolling the entire time, it’d be impossible to feel positive.

Besides the deadly pandemic, we’ve seen wildfires in California and Australia, crop-killing locust swarms in East Africa, and a devastating chemical explosion in Beirut that killed at least 190 people, to name a few disasters this year.

There has, however, been some things to be happy about.

For one, more people wash their hands after using the bathroom.

Avoiding your relatives is now also sort of advised by medical experts.

Most importantly, nowadays, when you stay in your room for 60 consecutive days and do nothing but binge-watch shows on Netflix, you can claim you’re doing it for the sake of your fellow citizens.

But if none of these things has managed to cheer you up, maybe this little uplifting tale might.

Passers-By Shield a Cat from Rain With Umbrellas So It Can Sleep Soundly

A post about a kind-hearted passer-by and a sleeping cat has been circulating on social media, melting hearts across the country.

The post was uploaded to Facebook by user Haslinda Ali on Sunday (15 Nov).

According to Haslinda, she was walking along a sheltered pathway after having lunch at her mother’s place, when she came across a heartwarming sight.

A dark brown cat that was sleeping against one of the pillars of the sheltered walkway had a white umbrella shielding it, as it was raining heavily at the time.

But due to the strong winds, the umbrella kept moving.

So, to further shield it from the cold shower, another passer-by placed her umbrella over the sleeping feline.

Yes, two separate passers-by had placed their umbrellas over this sleeping cat so it wouldn’t get wet and cold, and could sleep in peace.

Needless to say, the umbrellas must have helped, as the cat was in deep slumber, probably dreaming about eating fish and playing with a ball of yarn.

Netizens praised the compassionate onlookers who spared a thought for the cat, when many would have simply walked past it.

One netizen whose mother also lives in the area said residents make sure that the community cats are always fed.

Maybe Singaporeans aren’t as unkind as some people think?

It’s certainly touching to see that even at a time when we have so much to worry about, we still feel an ache in our chest whenever we see an animal in discomfort or distress.
