Amidst the gloom and doom, here’s some paw-sitive news for us to rejoice about.
The Ukrainian striped cat Stepan, loved for its dead beat expressions and adorable face, has garnered over a million followers on Instagram and Tiktok and is a registered petfluencer in the World Influencers and Bloggers Association. Yup, that’s a thing.
In particular, the pictures of him posing and looking like a jaded middle-aged man next to much-too-large glasses of alcohol have gone viral, cementing his position as the most famed cat in Ukraine.

The feline has even been featured by celebrities like Britney Spears and brands like Valentino, so he’s definitely someone claw-some.
Safe and Sound
Amidst the Ukrainian conflict, Stepan’s social media went radio silent for nearly two weeks, prompting fans to incessantly worry over Stepan and his family’s safety.
Thankfully, on 16 March, Stepan’s owner, Anna, posted a lengthy Instagram post explaining how the area where they live, North Saltovka in Kharkiv, was heavily shelled and attacked by Russian forces, forcing them to hide in their basement for two days before escaping the city. Houses were burned, but theirs was lucky enough to stand until the 8th day before they had to evacuate.

The family then travelled to Lviv, a city in Western Ukraine that borders Poland, before finally entering Poland and leaving Ukraine.
The World Influencers and Bloggers Association and their founder Mariia Grazhina Chaplin got personally involved in assisting the family in finding a safe house in France.
I told you it’s a thing.
Stepan and his family now reside in a rented apartment where they are free to stay until the crisis is over, though they express worries about their relatives still trapped in Ukraine.
Fans celebrated over their safety with an outpour of love and support, and expressed well-wishes for Stepan and his family’s continued safety and for the end of the conflict.

Only the Beginning
Now that Stepan, Anna, and their family are safe, his social media accounts have been flooded with calls to action to #stopwar and draw attention onto the conflict so as to ease the humanitarian crisis as soon as possible.
Though Stepan and his family were fortunate enough to successfully leave and find their bearings, almost three million refugees have been displaced from Ukraine so far with the numbers only climbing.
Many of the refugees do not have stable living conditions yet, and the human suffering and impact is only escalating the longer the conflict drags on.
