Cathay Cineplexes Closes West Mall Outlet on 20 February, Leaving Chain with Five Locations amid Financial Struggles

Cathay Cineplexes doesn’t seem to be having the best year.

On 28 January 2025, the cinema chain made headlines when it was revealed that landlords had issued letters of demand to its outlets in Century Square and Causeway Point over outstanding rent payments.

Now, Cathay is back in the news — this time for the closure of its outlet in West Mall, Bukit Batok.

Cathay Cineplexes Closes West Mall Outlet on 20 February 2025

In a Facebook post on 17 February 2025, Cathay Cineplexes announced that its West Mall outlet will officially close on 20 February 2025.

The post read: “Our last day of operations is February 20, 2025″.

Cathay advised regular moviegoers in the west to visit its other nearest outlets at Cathay Cineplex Jem and Cathay Cineplex Clementi 321 instead. The cinema chain also thanked patrons for their support over the years.

All other Cathay Cineplex locations remain open.

Netizens React to Closure at West Mall Outlet

Unsurprisingly, the closure of Cathay Cineplex West Mall has disappointed many cinema-goers, with several expressing their frustration and sadness in the comment section of Cathay’s post.

One user wrote: “All the best, Cathay Cineplexes, for your remaining branches. You are one of the few cinema operators left in Singapore. Hope you will tide through.”

Another commented: “Very sad leh, this news… I always bring my mum to watch movies at this cinema.”

Cathay Cineplex Has Five Remaining Locations

The West Mall closure is just the latest in a string of shutdowns.

On 27 August 2023, Cathay Cineplex closed its Parkway Parade outlet. Its locations in Orchard Cineleisure and AMK Hub have also ceased operations.

Cathay Cineplexes will continue to operate at five locations across Singapore:

  • Century Square
  • Causeway Point
  • Downtown East
  • JEM
  • Clementi 321

Cathay’s “Save Our Screens” Promotion

Interestingly, news of the closure comes just days after Cathay launched a promotional campaign called “Save Our Screens”, aimed at drawing more patrons back to its cinemas.

As part of the promotion, the cinema chain is selling a voucher set that includes ten movie tickets and ten sets of popcorn and drink combos for just $100.

If you do the math correctly, the value is $10 for a single movie ticket with a set of popcorn and drink combo.

For comparison, a standard 2D movie ticket at Cathay Cineplexes typically costs: $11.50 from Monday to Thursday, and $15.50 on weekends.

This makes the promotion an absolute steal for movie lovers.

Customers can pre-order the vouchers now and collect them at any Cathay Cineplex counter from 21 February 2025.

The vouchers are valid until 31 December 2025 and can be used every day — including public holidays.

Why Is Cathay Closing Another Outlet?

The closure of its West Mall outlet isn’t all that surprising, given the financial troubles of its parent company, mm2 Asia.

In January 2025, mm2 Asia was hit with legal letters demanding clearance of $2.7 million in outstanding rent for its Century Square and Causeway Point outlets.

While it’s unclear whether mm2 Asia has successfully cleared these outstanding payments, both outlets remain operational for now.

With yet another Cathay Cineplex shutting down, Singapore’s cinema landscape continues to shift — leaving moviegoers wondering just how long their favourite theatres will be around.
