Man Caught Buying His Driving Licence Card for $200 at a Petrol Station

Failing your TP too many times?

Well, don’t give up yet, and certainly don’t resort to unethical means like buying your driving license.

A man was recently caught for buying his driving license card for $200 at a petrol station.

Here’s how it happened.

Driving without a valid license

On Friday (21 Oct), the man, 47, admitted to driving without a valid license and using a vehicle without valid insurance coverage.

The man’s vehicle is registered under his wife’s name, a 32-year-old Chinese lady holding permanent residency in China.

Investigations revealed that in November 2019, the 47-year-old had driven his family to IMM shopping mall to purchase daily supplies, and thereafter to West Coast Park for dinner.

On the night of which, the man was driving on West Coast Highway heading towards West Coast Park when he was involved in a traffic accident.

At the T-junction, the man steered right into the carpark immediately after the traffic light had turned green.

It was during this right-turn when the man collided with a motorcycle heading straight.

The 54-year-old motorcyclist was flung off his motorcycle.

When the police reached the scene of the accident, the 47-year-old presented his “driving license” to the authorities, whereby the authorities subsequently discovered that the license was not valid.

The man thereafter admitted that three months beforehand, he had bought the license for $200 from a petrol station.

However, he is not acquainted with the man who he purchased the license from.

The 47-year-old was merely instructed to hand the sum of money and a copy of his photograph over in exchange for the “driving license” in three days.

The 47-year-old’s rationale for doing so is this – he had already failed his TP multiple times. In August 2019 when he failed his TP once again, he resorted to buying the “driving license”.

There’s always another one

But this was not the end.

Two years after the man was caught for driving without a valid license, he once again drove his wife’s car even though he still did not have a license at that point in time.

Some people just never seem to learn, do they?

In July last year, when the man’s wife was out at work, he took the keys to her car without informing her and drove to Yishun.

During his journey back home, he was unfortunately (or rather fortunately, for other road users) stopped by the traffic police, where he was caught once again for driving without a valid license.

The prosecutor noted this, saying that the man does not show remorse and should thereby receive a harsher sentence.

However, the 47-year-old in pleading for a lighter sentence had brought up his responsibilities of having to take care of not just his 7-year-old and 9-year-old children, but also his father. The 47-year-old had also recently become unemployed.

For his offences, the man was eventually sentenced to 12 weeks’ imprisonment, a fine of $3,000, with his licenses revoked for 36 months.
