Many people treat their foreign domestic workers as family, especially if they’ve been working with us for a long time.
This sense of trust is what makes betrayal feel even worse. Just ask 36-year-old beautician Shalini, who came home to find her FDW sleeping with a man in her master bedroom.
FDW’s Day Off With Nobody At Home
On 11 September, Sunday, Shalini gave her FDW her usual Sunday day off. There’s usually someone home in her Block 107A Canberra Street four-room flat, but both her and her husband weren’t home that morning.
Trusting the Indian FDW as she’s been with the family for three years, Shalini let her sleep in and left her alone in the house. However, when she returned home at 11.45am, she found that the door to her master bedroom was closed.
FDW Found In Master Bedroom with Man
Walking closer, she realised with horror that there were “thumping” sounds from the room. Her helper must have heard Shalini returning home, as she emerged from the room saying “sister, sorry, sorry.”
It was then that Shalini realised there was an unknown man in her bedroom, which scared her so much that she was in tears. While the man got dressed in a hurry and left the room, Shalini quickly called her husband. Her husband immediately called the police upon hearing what happened.
The police confirmed to Shin Min Daily News that a 31-year-old had been arrested for wilful trespass at the Canberra flat.

Felt Betrayed, Treated FDW As Family
Shalini told Stomp that her FDW has been with her for almost three years, and was good at her work and took good care of her son too.
“I treated her like family and would even buy her the same clothes,” said Shalini, who paid the FDW a monthly salary of $700 and gave her every Sunday off. The FDW usually sleeps on a mattress in the living room and doesn’t usually enter the master bedroom.
Confiscating her FDW’s phone, Shalini found “countless videos of them being sexually active every week”. However, this was the first time that the FDW brought the man home.
She bought a flight and sent her FDW home on the evening of the same day.
