Families of 10 Blocks of Graves in CCK Muslim Cemetery to Claim Remains by 12 Sep 2022

As we’re reminded every day, Singapore is a tiny, tiny island.

Besides ensuring that space is judiciously allocated, the government also has to tear down old sites and buildings to maximise the little space we have.

Sadly, this can sometimes mean resorting to drastic means.

10 Blocks of Graves at CCK Muslim Cemetery to be Exhumed

The graves at ten blocks at the Chua Chu Kang Muslim cemetery will be exhumed under the latest phase of an exhumation programme.

The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) made the announcement yesterday in a post on Facebook.

According to the post, the remains of those who have passed will be reinterred after the exhumation in Phase 8 of the Exhumation Programme.

The exhumation will affect the following blocks:

• 10
• 11
• 12
• 13
• 14
• 15
• 16
• 18
• 21
• 22

Families Must Claim Remains by 12 Sep 2022

MUIS said family members need to register to claim their loved one’s remains before Phase 8 begins.

From 13 September 2021 to 12 September 2022, family members can register online here to claim the remains of their next-of-kin.

Those who are unable to register online can make an appointment at the same site.

“Claimants will be notified via email and SMS nearing the exhumation date. The claim period will last for one year until 2022,” it said.

Alternatively, you can call 6238 4504 or send an email to [email protected] to make an appointment at the Muslim Cemetery Exhumation Office (MCEO)

The claimant is encouraged to witness the exhumation and reinterment process, and should inform MUIS two weeks in advance if they are unable to do so.

The claimant will later be given details of the reinterment, such as the new grave block and plot number.

The cost of exhumation and reinternment will be borne by the government.

Graves that are claimed will contain the remains of eight deceased per crypt, while unclaimed graves will have 16 remains per crypt.

Claims Can Be Made For Graves Unaffected By Exhumation 

Claims can also be made through the same avenues for graves unaffected by the latest phase of the exhumation.

Claims for unaffected graves, however, must meet the following conditions:

• the remains must have been buried for at least 15 years prior to the last day of registration
• the deceased must be related to the deceased in one of the graves affected by the exhumation
• all family members must consent to the exhumation

A non-refundable fee of S$80 will be charged for the exhumation of unaffected graves.
