Safety first, kids!
That’s what the transport providers always aim for – to provide efficient and safe travel to passengers on dangerous roads.
And that’s what everyone thinks its employees should be committed to, at all times.
Unfortunately, and rather ironically, this man forgot what he set out to do as someone in a high position, nevertheless.
DTL CEO Driving Without Consideration
Alex Goei Beng Guan, 62, found himself going on the wrong track following a traffic mishap.
It’s not uncommon for traffic accidents to happen occasionally, so why all the fuss surrounding this guy in particular?
Well, he just happened to be the chief executive officer of everyone’s favourite MRT line managed by SBS Transit, the blue and beautiful Downtown Line.
On 23 June, Wednesday, Goei was charged with two offences under the Road Traffic Act for driving without reasonable consideration for other road users.
His actions back in February earlier this year led to an accident to occur.
What Happened
In the afternoon of 5 Feb, Goei was driving along the slip road of Woodlands Road headed for Upper Bukit Timah Road.
While barrelling along the slip road of Kranji Expressway towards Bukit Timah Expressway, he apparently did not give way to traffic, which resulted in an accident occurring.
Hashim Hussein, 74, was riding the motorcycle that Goei’s car ended up colliding into on the second lane of the slip road, which had only two lanes.
Also injured was 68-year-old Madam Supariyah Salamat, who was riding a pillion on the same motorcycle.
Goei was thus accused of causing harm to Hashim, and even worse, grievous hurt to Madam Supariyah.
However, the extent of the pair’s injuries was unspecified.
Wonder what his train of thought must’ve been then.
The case hasn’t been closed yet, though, with Goei’s lawyer representative Mr John Daniels requesting more time to make representations to the prosecution.
Goei will thus return to court on the 30th of July, while he is currently out on bail amounting to S$10,000.
He may face a jail term of up to two years and a fine of up to S$5,000 or both if he is found to have caused grievous hurt because of his negligent driving.
As for causing hurt for driving without reasonable consideration, one may be jailed for up to a year, be fined up to S$2,500, or both.
SBS Says It’s A Personal Matter
SBS Transit’s senior vice president of corporate communications Tammy Tan commented that Goei “regrets the unfortunate incident.”
However, she added that they would not be able to comment further on the incident, which is a personal matter regarding Goei, in addition to legal proceedings still ongoing.
Goei had joined the company in 1985, according to the company’s website, and assisted in the development of bus service planning and project management at the time.
After launching the North-East Line and Sengkang-Punggol LRT line with his involvement, he was then promoted to senior vice president of rail operations in 2013.
So he’s not just a regular employee there, but someone who’s watched the transport scene grow under SBS Transit for close to 30 years.
How unfortunate that the journey has led to this.
