Mention the word Chang and you’ll either think of refreshing Thai beer or your colleague named Chang who can’t stop digging his nose and snorting while he works.
Thank goodness I don’t have to work with Chang anymore, you say.
But did you know that Chang has its own brand of soda water? It’s called… well, Chang Soda Water. Creative names do not seem to be a speciality of Chang’s.

At any rate, don’t rush out to purchase this brand of sparkling water you just discovered, because it may just have some harmful ingredients.
SFA Recalls Chang Soda Water Due to Presence of Food Products; Beer is Not Affected
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has issued a recall for Chang Soda Water after bromate was detected in certain samples of the product.
Singapore Food Regulations dictate that food products are not allowed to contain any incidental ingredients, such as extraneous substances, toxic substances, and toxins.
This includes bottled water.
The agency announced the recall in a post on Facebook.
According to CNA, the affected bottles of Chang Soda Water are in 325 ml bottles and have a best before date of Feb 25, 2021.
They look like this:

What Is Bromate and Why Is It Dangerous?
According to Aquatell, bromate is formed in water during the process of ozonation, a chemical water treatment technique based on the infusion of ozone into water.
Some people who have ingested excessive levels of bromate have experienced gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, according to The New York State Department of Health.
Those who ingested extremely high concentrations of the acid also experienced kidney effects, nervous system effects, and hearing loss.

Don’t worry though; those people were exposed to levels of bromate thousands of times higher than the amount found in contaminated drinking water.
What To Do If You’ve Purchased Or Consumed A Bottle
Please don’t panic and hurl your bottle of Chang Soda Water out the window.
The SFA advised those who have purchased bottles of the soda water not to consume it.
But if you have already ingested it and are concerned about your health, you should seek some medical advice, said SFA.
If you’d like to exchange or get a refund for your Chang Soda Water, you can contact the importer at [email protected] or at 6752 4320.

Chang Beer is Not Affected
If you’re an alcoholic like me, you may have panicked the instant you saw the words “Chang” and “recall”.
There’s no need to fret, though, as the SFA has not mentioned our beloved beer product at all.
So you can keep filling your mouths with cold glasses of that delicious Chang beer for now.
