Changing shampoos every few months to maintain healthy hair? You might have been doing it wrongly

Our hair dressers or even friends are telling us that we have to switch shampoos every now and then to ensure healthy. Is this a myth or a fact?

It has been scientifically proven to be true. But the reason for changing shampoos is, surprisingly, not because of healthy hair. At least, not in the way we thought.

Using the same shampoo on our precious hair does not decrease it’s effectiveness. In fact, the reason why we’re told to change our shampoos is because we want to keep our hair from building up too much oil, or getting too dry and damaged.

Yes, it’s precisely because the products we use might prove to be too effective in the long run.

Moisturizing and conditioning shampoos leave a build-up in your hair shaft after prolonged use and eventually cause your hair to lose its shine and look completely flat. On the other hand, deep-cleansing shampoos can be too effective, stripping not just the build up within your hair follicles, but the natural oils of your hair as well, rendering it dry and prone to damage.

Most of us commit this mistake: we’ll use the anti-dandruff shampoo from this brand, and a couple of months later, we’ll use the anti-dandruff shampoo from another brand, thinking that by changing brands, we’ll be able to maintain the effectiveness of such shampoos. That’s wrong.

What you should do, instead, is to select several shampoo formulas: one which address your specific problem, such as conditioning, anti-dandruff,etc; and one which balances out the effects.

If you have dry and damaged hair, you can opt for moisturizing and damage-care shampoos, and switch to a deep-cleaning shampoo in between to make sure you clean away the oils from all the moisturizing build-up.

This is even more essential if you use lots of hair serum and cream. You can switch back to your usual moisturizing shampoos and alternate them for better results.

Alternatively, you can opt for using deep-cleansing shampoos occasionally so it will not ruin the recovery process of your hair.

On the contrary, if you use clarifying shampoo normally to rid your hair of daily styling products, do take note to switch to a moisturizing shampoo every three or four months to maintain the balance of your hair and scalp.
