Unlike when you’re travelling in a car or on a bike, there’s a certain feeling of safety when you travel on a bus, due to how big it is.
Indeed, you’re three times more likely to get injured driving a car than taking a bus, according to researchers.
But just because it’s unlikely doesn’t mean it won’t happen, of course; bus accidents still occur from time to time, and when they do, people can end up getting hurt.
Changi Airport Road Accident Left 1 Trapped in a Bus Driver’s Seat; 3 Taken to CGH
Yesterday (22 Sep), at around 1:05pm, an accident occurred along 65 Airport Boulevard, between Terminal 3 and Terminal 1.
An SBS Transit Bus is believed to have slammed into a pillar of a Skytrain track above it.
When the Singapore Civil Defence Force arrived, they found a person trapped at the driver’s seat of the bus.
It’s not known if the bus captain was the one trapped.
Fortunately, the SCDF managed to rescue the trapped individual using hydraulic rescue equipment.
After which three people involved in the accident were taken to Changi General Hospital in a conscious state.
Those injured are the 59-year-old male bus driver, who sustained leg abrasions, and two passengers, a 34-year-old woman, and a man, 42.
It’s unclear how the accident happened. Police investigations are underway.
Speaking about the accident, Changi Airport Group said no services had been running on the affected Skytrain track, and there was no impact to the infrastructure.
Bus Believed to Have Mounted Kerb
According to SBS Transit, the offending bus was service 27, which operates between Hougang Central and Changi Airport, via Sengkang and Tampines.
It was exiting the basement of Terminal 3 and en route to Terminal 1 when it reportedly mounted a kerb.
“We are trying to get in touch with the passengers as we were not able to do so at the scene. We would like to extend our care and concern for their well-being and to render assistance,” SBS Transit said.
After the accident, SBS Transit said its bus services 24, 27, and 53 would be skipping the bus stop along Airport Boulevard.
These services have since resumed their regular operations.
The transport operator later issued an apology to passengers.
“We would like to extend our care and concern for their well-being and to render assistance. We would also like to apologise to affected passengers and motorists for the inconvenience caused.”
It added that it’s assisting the police with their investigations.
