Now, for instance, it seems that a new symptom of the disease is an inability to comprehend the phrase “stay at home”.

Man Goes to a Licensed Moneylender While on MC, Later Tests Positive for COVID-19

In May last year, 56-year-old Burhanto Rejo visited Yishun Polyclinic complaining of acute respiratory infection symptoms.

He was issued a five-day MC from 22 May to 26 May, and in line with the COVID-19 guidelines at the time, had to stay at home for the duration of the MC, and undergo a swab test at the clinic.

At the time, Singapore was going through the circuit breaker, where residents’ movements were restricted to curb the spread of the virus.

Despite being on MC and it being during the circuit breaker, Burhanto allegedly left his flat along Yishun Ring Road on the afternoon of 23 May.

He then allegedly visited the Hougang branch of Goldstar Credit, and was asked by an employee to complete a health declaration form to indicate if he was feeling well or had flu-like symptoms.

Here, Burhanto had two options:

  1. Realise he was putting others in danger and head straight home
  2. Literally anything but lie to the employee and enter the outlet.

So, of course, he lied to the employee and entered the outlet.

This was bad enough, but Burhanto later tested positive for COVID-19.

Because of this, Goldstar reportedly had to bear disinfection costs amounting to S$600.

Now, the 56-year-old will have to face the legal consequences of his actions.

Faces 2 Charges; Intends to Plead Guilty

After being charged last year, the Singaporean returned to court yesterday (13 July) to face another charge.

He now faces one cheating charge and another charge of breaking COVID-19 laws by leaving his place of accommodation without a reasonable excuse.

And if convicted of cheating, he could be jailed for up to three years, fined, or both.
