If there’s one thing Singaporeans really love, it’s cheap food. We’re so obsessed with finding the best deals available that a study was even conducted on which region you can find the cheapest food in.
With lunch costing $6.01 on average, it’s no surprise that netizens are flocking to this mixed rice stall in Bedok that sells a bowl of Bak Kut Teh and rice for only $2.50, even in this economy.
Affordable Bak Kut Teh
The stall, named Xian Jin Mixed Vegetable Rice, is located at Blk 216 Bedok Food Centre, nestled right in the heartlands.
On 27 March, Facebook user Ben Lim took to the platform to praise the stall for its affordable prices. According to him, the store sold a bowl of Bak Kut Teh at just $2, with rice added on for $0.50, and he dubbed the meal “cheap and very tasty”.
He attached images of his meal to his post, featuring a hearty bowl of Bak Kut Teh with a generous portion of meat, and a decently-hefty heap of rice—all that for just $2.50.
Perhaps pre-empting netizens’ disbelief, he also posted a picture of the price stated on the stall’s signboard, proving that the bowl of Bak Kut Teh somehow only costs $2.
Other Items Cheap Too
Of course, commenters under his post were incredulous, with many wondering how the stall made a profit, or asking what their operating hours were.
But it’s not the first time the stall made waves—earlier in the year, on 1 February, the same user posted about a plate of cai png he bought from the stall that cost him only $2 as well.
In the post, he said that patrons could choose any three items for just $2, attaching a picture of his meal, which showed two generous servings of meat and one egg.
Again, he attached pictures of the stall, demonstrating the wide variety of dishes available. The other photo shows its signboard, where almost every menu item, from seafood soup to pig intestine porridge, is priced at $2.
Add-ons like you tiao, pig’s skin, bee hoon and more are all priced at $0.50.
Same Price For 20 Years
The stall has been keeping prices at $2 for nearly 20 years, since its opening in 2005.
According to stallholder Ms Lin in an interview with Shin Min Daily News, the stall has endeavoured to keep prices that low, in consideration of seniors staying in the area.
Amid the rising cost of living, where core inflation reached a 14-year-record high of 5.5% in February this year, her devotion to providing food this cheap is truly admirable.
How To Get There
So now, here’s the most important part—how do you get there?
The hawker centre is located at 216 Bedok North Street 1, Singapore 460216. Its number is #1-02, but reportedly, there are long queues at peak hours, so be prepared for that.
It’s open from 8.30am to 2.30pm on Mondays to Fridays, and it’s closed on the weekends.
It’s also quite a long walk from the nearest MRT station, Bedok—around 15 minutes, to help you burn off all the calories of your meal.
