On Tuesday (29 Jun), a child care centre supervisor was sentenced to imprisonment for 23 months for embezzling over $78,000.
Nuruljannah Ahmad, 34, pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal breach of trust by an employee.
Here’s what went down.
Supervisor of Childcare Centre Jailed 23 Months for Embezzling Over S$78K in Payments From Parents
According to court documents, Nuruljannah had been working as a supervisor at the Star Learners child care centre at 266 Compassvale Bow since December 2014.
She had committed the offences while she was still being investigated and prosecuted for an earlier offence of a similar nature.
Nuruljannah had the responsibility of collecting the payment for child care fees and other miscellaneous expenses from parents. They had paid in either cash or cheque.
She would bring the money home for safekeeping. Once a month, Ms Jessica Lim Lei, the director of the centre, would visit the centre to collect the money from her.
Nuruljannah would also submit a cash and cheque summary to Ms Lim, which recorded the money that had been collected for the month.
Ms Lim would check the amount of money collected against the summary prepared by Nuruljannah. Nuruljannah would also note the collections on a payment record which she was then supposed to sign.
During the period between 4 January 2015 and 5 February 2016, Nuruljannah had stopped accurately recording the money she received from parents in the summary.
Hence, when Ms Lim was given less than what should have been given, she remained unsuspecting and did not think anything was wrong.
In addition, Nuruljannah would not register new students in the centre’s system and would misappropriate registration payments.
Nuruljannah thus embezzled a total of S$78,423 which she used for her own expenses. She has paid back only S$5,434 in restitution.
Ms Lim carried out an audit on Star Learner’s accounts only after she learned that Nuruljannah had embezzled money from her previous employer, Kinderland Educare Services.
She had read this information from a newspaper report published on 5 February 2016.
On 23 February 2016, Ms Lim reported her for misappropriation of monies.
Nuruljannah had previously been a vice-principal of Kinderland Childcare Centre at Republic Polytechnic. She had stolen S$9,664 between January and May 2014, and was given a fine of S$10,000 on the same day that the newspaper report detailing her offence of embezzlement had been published.
Individuals convicted of criminal breach of trust by an employee may be imprisoned for up to 15 years or fined, or both.
