Chilli Sauce Ordered for Recall by SFA Coz The Bottles Might ‘Explode’

I think I speak for most of us when I say that we like spicy food. Even if we can’t take foods that are too spicy, we’re still willing to try them if they’re known to taste really good.

For example, there has been an ongoing craze for Mala Hotpot because of how unbelievably spicy and numbing it can be. We previously also had a craze where everyone was eating the Korean Samyang Hot Chicken Ramen.

So what about sriracha sauce? If you’re a big fan of it like me, you would be familiar with the brand: Huy Fong Sriracha Hot Chilli Sauce.

Doesn’t ring a bell?

Maybe a photo of it would help.

Yep, that’s the one. But here’s some bad news for you. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has just issued a recall for some of these bottles for fear that they may actually blow up in your face when you open them.

This recall follows a similar one by the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) which issued a warning about this on Thursday, 26 December.

Why Will They Blow Up?

According to FSANZ, some bottles of the hot sauce may bloat and continue to ferment because of the lactic acid build-up.

This, in turn, causes a build-up of pressure in the bottles which will explode once they are opened.

The FSANZ also warned in a statement, “Do not open bottles that feel bloated and return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund.”

Is The Bottle I Have Affected?

This recall applies to the 17oz (502ml) and 28oz (828ml) bottles imported from the United States. These bottles also have best before dates of March 2021.

So if you realised that the bottles you have bought have the above characteristics, please contact the place you purchase it from for refunds or exchanges.

SFA has already done their part by informing the importer, TC Import & Export, to recall the bottles. The recall is ongoing.

Who would have thought that the desire for hot sauce could end up blowing up in your face, both figuratively and literally?
