It hasn’t been a good year for China.
Other than a record number of COVID-19 cases, a China Eastern Airlines aircraft crashed in mountains in China’s southern Guangxi region this afternoon.
Here’s what is known so far.
Plane Crashed While on the Way to Guangzhou
The aircraft, which had departed from Kunming at 1:11pm local time, was due to land on Guangzhou at 3:05pm.
According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), the aircraft, Flight MU5735, lost airborne contact over Wuzhou city in the Guangxi region. Flightradar24 had lost the tracking of the plane at 2:22pm.
The altitude of the plane, based on data from Flightradar24, has had dropped sharply from 29,100 feet to 3,225 feet in less than three minutes.
State news channel CCTV reported that the plane has crashed in Teng county near Wuzhou, and it created a mountain fire over that region. Locals over the area also said that it has caused forest fires.
CAAC has activated its emergency response and sent a team to the scene.
A rescue official allegedly said that the entire plane has been completely disintegrated.
As of now, it’s unknown if there are any survivors.
The plane carried 123 passengers and nine crew members.

Social Media Shows Crash
There are multiple videos showing the aftermath of the crash:
There’s also a CCTV footage showing that the plane had allegedly nosedived to the ground:
Boeing 737-800 Aircraft
The plane is a six-year-old Boeing 737-800, and if you’ve remembered, Boeing has been in the spotlight in recent years for its safety issue.
After two crashes in less than five months, the Boeing 737 MAX passenger airliner was grounded worldwide between March 2019 and December 2020.
Netflix even released a documentary about Boeing’s “downfall”—ironically, just last month.
However, the plane that crashed today is a 737-800 model, which has a good safety record.
