A Wise Old Man once said this:

“Technology is intrusive, and it’s here to stay.”

And while I hate to agree with the old guy (cos he once tried to hit on my mum), I’ve to say this:

He speaks the truth.

I mean; just look around you. All around the world, technology’s dominating.

Heck, if you really want to put it into perspective, you just have to look at toilets nowadays.

What. Precisely. What?!

In fact, if the technology was ever more prevalent, I would think that Terminators is no longer a distant fantasy, but a reality-

Editor: Hey ball boy, have you seen the latest news?

What?

Editor: Over in China, they use technology to determine the price of your cai png!

NANI?!

Well, that’s it, folks.

Let’s prepare a few sets of clothes for some naked robots, shall we?

Food Recognition Technology in China

In Singapore, the cai png ordering process is pretty simple:

  • Point out the dish you want to the stall assistant
  • Go ‘Ah this’, ‘Ehhh… that ba’
  • Hold your finger there unnecessarily long in the hopes that they will ladle more for you
  • They don’t, unless you’re super chio or have gone every day for 365 days a year
  • Give up, and head to the cashier
  • They tell you a price you’re not even sure is right
  • You pay the required sum of money
  • They give you change
  • They have notes but they choose to give you a heap load of coins for change
  • You walk away with your food

However, over in China, the cai png ordering process is a lil’… different, especially for this cafeteria-style restaurant in Chengdu’s high tech zone.

While the ordering process is in itself pretty much the same (I would assume), the payment procedure involves more than a human cashier and abrupt hand movement;

It uses a camera to identify your lunch and automatically counts the cost from there.

Yeah, incredible as it sounds, this particular restaurant in China uses such a tech-proficient method, and it looks pretty dope on camera too.

Here, check it out for yourself.

Should you be unable to view the video for some inexplicable reason, however, here are some screenshots to show what the video’s roughly about.

The scanning process:

The payment process:

(How fitting it is, that even the payment process is high-tech)

And of course, after payment, what’s left is just the consumption process.

Netizens react

The video, titled ‘Food Recognition Technology in China’, was released on Youtube just 2 days ago, on 20 May 2019.

And despite its relatively short stint thus far, the video has already garnered 1,127 views, with a handful of comments.

Some commenters, in particular, wrote on the appeal and efficiency of the aforementioned payment system.

And seeing how it’s the web, some also exposed some potential loopholes that come with the system.

Though the notion was quickly circumvented by a futuristic Netizen.

Also, as fans of the Silicon Valley drama might recall, this moment was actually mentioned in an episode.

Though as it turns out, it wasn’t all positivity.

One, for example, pointed out how humans would have processed the payment in a quicker manner.

And another pointed out something we might’ve been dreading all along.

Though whether it does happen the way several movies have portrayed it…

Remains to be seen.

And so… Singapore to have it?

While we’ve no idea whether Singapore will ever implement the futuristic-sounding system in its local food courts, we can’t help but wonder;

How will buying cai png feel like if there was such a system in place?

And while it might be a distant notion, I just wanna ask you a quick question:

Would it make your cai png experience even more… ‘atas’?

Tell us and you might just get a free cai png…
