A suspension bridge mishap at Xiata Scenic Area in Zhaosu county has claimed five lives and injured 24 others. The accident occurred on 6 Aug 2025, at approximately 6:18 pm local time, when a suspension cable snapped on Jiangjun Bridge.
The bridge deck tilted sharply after the cable failure, sending 29 people falling off the structure. Twenty-four people sustained injuries, with at least two suffering major injuries. All casualties were transported to local hospitals for medical treatment.
Bridge Collapse Footage Shows Desperate Rescue Attempts
Viral footage circulating on Chinese social media platforms Weibo and Douyin captured the aftermath of the bridge failure. Videos showed the suspension bridge hanging at a steep angle over a river with a fast-moving current.
The clips revealed tourists clinging to the remaining suspended section of the tilted bridge. Stranded visitors attempted to cross to safety by balancing on the damaged structure.
Additional footage showed one casualty being carried on a makeshift stretcher onto a tram.
A tour guide based in Xinjiang, Yun Shang, shared his experience on Douyin after leading a group at the scene during the accident. His tour group included a navy soldier who immediately assisted injured victims. Yun’s group also participated in rescue efforts.
Previous Bridge Failure and Ongoing Investigation
Jiemian News reported that the same bridge experienced a similar incident on 19 Jun 2024. The earlier accident also involved a snapped suspension cable that caused the bridge deck to tilt, though no injuries occurred in that incident.
Police have temporarily closed Xiata Scenic Area pending safety investigations. The popular tourist destination in northern Xinjiang’s Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture is known for its natural scenic views and hiking opportunities.
Authorities have not announced a reopening date for the scenic area.
