If anyone gave me an angpow that contained over $1,000, I’d probably check if they even meant to give it to me in the first place.
(And then I’d probably go buy 4D with the digits representing the amount of money they gave me.)
Anyway, I’m sure receiving such a large sum would make most of us ecstatic.
But not all of us, and definitely not this woman in China.
Chinese Woman Called Boyfriend’s Parents “Stingy” For S$1,700 Angpow
Yup, you read that correctly.
Instead of gratitude, a woman in China took to social media platform Weibo to vent her frustration at the “meagre sum” her boyfriend’s parents had given her during the Chinese New Year holiday.
As of now, it seems like the post has been deleted, but here are some screenshots:
For readers who don’t know what’s happening from the screenshot, don’t worry because we’ve got you covered.
Family Seemed “Well-to-Do”
In her post, she mentioned that it was her first time visiting her boyfriend’s parents at their home and that his parents had cooked good dishes for her throughout her stay there.
She then concluded that his family’s financial situation was “not bad”.
Hello, can give you so much money in your angpow, of course not bad lah.
Before the younger couple left to return to the city, the boyfriend’s mother gave her an angpow. According to her post, all the girls that the boy brought home previously received angpows too.
She then opened the angpow in the car, and to her absolute horror, there was only RMB 8,000 in it.
Just FYI, that’s around S$1,700.
I know right, so little?!
She Felt “Disrespected” and “Unimportant”
Uh… Okay.
This lady then went on about how absolutely pitiful she was, ranting about how she expected more from her boyfriend’s family and that they probably could afford to give her more.
She then highlighted that this was only their first meeting, hinting at the fact that they would treat her increasingly “worse”.
I mean, if your definition of a smaller angpow is $1,500, just tell me how to switch places with you, can?
She also brought up how her friend told her that RMB 8,000 was already plentiful, but she still continued to insist that it was not enough for her.
She then ended her rant with, “Are my expectations too high, or does his family not regard me with any importance at all?”
Miss, I think you’ve got your answer there.

Netizens’ Comments
When responding to such an absurd and even tone-deaf post, Chinese netizens did not disappoint.
Some made sarcastic comments to imply that the family should’ve given her way more, or even transferred home ownership to her.
Others told her to break up with the guy, and that she should find someone who’d be able to finance her large angpow wishes if she still wanted more.
As a whole, the comments were (expectedly) against her behaviour.
