While many of us may be enjoying the cold and wet weather January has showered us with, holed up on our couches watching Netflix all weekend, the business at Chinatown Festive Market has been severely dampened (both literally and figuratively) by the incessant rain this Chinese New Year period.
With the previous weekend offering better weather compared to the rest of January, the vendors at the market have observed more crowds heading to Chinatown to soak in the festive spirit. Having said that, business at most of the stalls were still slow.
According to reports by Lianhe Zaobao, the only vendor selling Chinese cured meat at the market, Ye Wei Qiang, had previously already predicted that business prospects at the market in the year of the snake would be poor. Coupled with the gloomy weather affecting business negatively, he decided to reduce his stocks by 40 per cent, and had no intentions of reducing its prices.
He mentioned that even if he could not sell all of his stocks, he would still be able to return the vacuum-packed products back to his supplier, who would then sell them again to market stalls.
Lianhe Zaobao also interviewed another vendor surnamed Che who sells seeds and nuts at the market. In previous years, she was able to display her products out in the open, attracting many customers. The wet weather in 2025 has hindered her from doing so, causing business to fall by around 10 to 20 per cent.
On the other hand, some vendors are feeling more optimistic about the sales of their products.
A stall owner surnamed Chen, who sells fresh flowers at the Chinatown Festive Market, told Lianhe Zaobao she was hopeful that business would pick up nearer to the first day of Chinese New Year.
A stall at Temple Street selling Chinese New Year snacks, called Ah Kee Market, also decided to hold a massive Buy Five Get One Free sale, enticing many customers.
I mean, which Singaporean doesn’t like a good sale and good food?
The manager of the stall, Chen Hui Wen, said in an interview with Lianhe Zaobao that they have sold roughly 80 per cent of their stocks, and were relatively confident that they will be able to sell out in the next few days, at the peak of Chinese New Year preparations.
So if you are reading this, take it as a sign for you to get out of your bed now (no matter how torturous it is) to support these businesses. The market is spread across three streets in Chinatown, Pagoda Street, Temple Street, and Sago Street.
