Barely a month after a fire claimed the lives of three migrant workers in Tuas, another fire has broken out.
This time at Chinatown Point.
Thankfully, however, no casualties were reported, though a man had to be admitted to Singapore General Hospital (SGH) for smoke inhalation.
Everything That’s Known About the Fire in Chinatown Point That Broke Out In a Luxury Bag Store
Earlier today (12 March 2021), a fire had broken out in a luxury bag store, Luxury City, at Chinatown Point’s level 1.
Around 100 people had to be evacuated from the building.
According to the Perennial Singapore Retail Management spokesperson, the fire occurred at 10.15am – just before the store’s operating hours.
“Our property operations team, which was the first responders on-site, entered the tenant’s unit to try to extinguish the fire before SCDF arrived.”
The SCDF was subsequently alerted at around 10:25 a.m.
Preliminary investigations showed that the cause of the fire was “of electrical origin”.
Apparently, the blaze involved an in-store signboard. Thankfully, it was killed off by the sprinkler system – prior to the SCDF’s arrival – at around 10:45 a.m.
No casualties were reported, though a man had to be admitted to Singapore General Hospital (SGH) for smoke inhalation.
According to reports, the management is currently collaborating with the authorities to investigate the incident.
Resuming Operations
Meanwhile, the mall has since resumed operations.
At around 2:00 p.m., Chinatown Point announced that they are officially operating again.
They also apologised for any inconvenience caused.
Not The First Time
In 2017, a fire had actually occurred in Chinatown Point… in the same month.
Occurring on 5 March 2017, a Schindler brand escalator running from the third to the fourth floor was reported to have caught fire, resulting in a copious amount of smoke.
According to preliminary investigations by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), the third-floor escalator landing electrical wiring was burnt. Presumably, a fault of some sort had developed in the motor there, as the wiring belonged to the motor.
Fortunately, there were no casualties and no injuries, as all the shoppers within the vicinity moved away rather quickly when they noticed something wrong.
The SCDF dispatched two fire engines, two red rhinos and two support vehicles to the scene. The fire was estimated to start around 3:00 p.m., and the SCDF arrived at 3.05 p.m. The fire was eventually put out using a water jet.
200 shoppers and mall workers had to be evacuated from the mall in the process.
It should be noted that prior to the firefighters’ arrival, an unnamed hero had actually rushed in to dampen the fire, and in the process prevented the fire from spreading.
