A Chinese woman who sought help from a fellow countryman living downstairs to store her luggage before moving was assaulted when she went to his room.
The man locked the door, forcibly kissed her, and tried to drag her to bed.
Here’s what happened.
New Worker Encounters Trouble While Relocating
Ms. Zhang (name transliterated from Mandarin), a 38-year-old woman from Shandong, China, said in an interview that she arrived in Singapore on 11 February this year.
She lived in a hostel apartment in Geylang. About a week later, she met a male neighbour from the floor below who was also a Chinese national working in Singapore.
The man, in his thirties or forties, worked in construction.
Ms. Zhang paid $450 in rent but had to share a room with five others.
Since she planned to move out of the hostel and find new employment, she temporarily needed a place to store her luggage.
Her friend’s hostel had limited space, so she asked around for help.
She contacted her downstairs neighbour, who readily agreed and arranged for her to come down on Sunday (9 March 2025) morning to see how much space he could clear for her belongings.
Assault and Escape
Ms. Zhang recalled that around 8:30 AM on Sunday, she went downstairs as agreed.
The man told her the door wasn’t locked and that she should enter directly. When she entered the room, she found him lying on the bed with the lights off.
He then got up, switched on the lights, and pointed to a sofa next to the bed, indicating she should sit down.
He then said to her: “You have a nice figure. You can find a partner here in Singapore.”
“He suddenly locked the door, walked up to me, held my face, and kissed my lips. He even tried to drag me to the bed,” Ms. Zhang said.
She struggled hard and shouted: “What you’re doing is against the law!” Only then did he release her.
She quickly unlocked the door and escaped back to her room.
“After returning, I felt disgusted and wanted to cry. I immediately brushed my teeth twice,” she said.
She sent text messages confronting him about his actions and demanding an apology.
The man sent a single “Sorry” before immediately retracting the message.
“I think he didn’t want to leave evidence admitting to this incident,” she said.
The police confirmed receiving a report of alleged molestation.
A 48-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the case, which is currently under investigation.
