Any hopes of us partying in 2021 like it’s 2019 are slim.
Until yesterday (26 Nov), Singapore had not reported any Covid-19 cases in the community for over two weeks.
Then we found out that the sole community case reported yesterday visited a bunch of places and flouted Covid-19 regulations.
This is why Covid-19 restrictions may stay in place for quite some time, as we could easily see a fresh wave of infections if we let our guard down.
This means that just like most newspapers around the world, our parties will have to go digital.
Chingay 2021 Will Go Digital in 2021
The popular Chingay Parade will be back next year, but it will look a little different.
To avoid crowds and prevent potential Covid-19 clusters from forming, the 2021 Chingay Parade will be fully digital for the first time.
According to The Straits Times, it will have a mix of old and new cultural performances, as well as traditional and emerging art forms.
The festival will feature 2,000 performers and 150 organisations.
There will, of course, be a lion dance performance. Next year’s dance will showcase 100 lions from troupes from about 10 countries and cities through a compilation of videos.
Traditional dragon dance and pole act performances will also be enhanced with CGI effects.
But the best thing about the Chingay Parade next year is that every resident can take part in it.
Anyone Can Perform in the Parade
Do you have a hidden talent?
Are you secretly a magician? A tap dancer? Or an accomplished banjo player?
In next year’s parade, residents can showcase their talents as part of a community engagement campaign called Jalan Jalan With Chingay.
If you have a hidden talent, you can submit a 1-minute video for the We’ve Got Talent category.
Or if you have a great voice, you can submit a video of you singing to the Sing With Me category. You can sing on your own or with your families, friends, and even neighbours.
There will also be a dance competition where young dancers will brighten elements of local dance cultures with new, unique interpretations.
Winners will not only get a prize, but will feature in the Chingay Parade as well.
Even if you don’t come out victorious, you’ll be able to see your submission on Chingay TV.
Also, as part of the Let’s Build A Float and Sew (So) Stylo campaigns, residents can also design their own Chingay floats and costumes.
So, when can we catch the show?
Details
The 2021 Chingay festival will be broadcast on 20 Feb at 8pm.
It will be shown on TV, social media, and other online platforms, said the People’s Association (PA).
The theme for next year’s parade is “Light of Hope”.
You can head here to submit your entries and find out more about the parade. Alternatively, you could follow Chingay’s Facebook and Instagram pages for more updates.
