Phone’s Automatic Wi-Fi Connection Sparks Relationship Drama in Chongqing
A Chinese man broke up with his girlfriend, surnamed Li, after her smartphone automatically connected to the Wi-Fi at a hotel they were visiting for the first time.
The incident occurred at the reception desk of a hotel in Chongqing. Li was searching for her digital identity card, having forgotten her physical ID card required for check-in.

Both Li and her then-boyfriend noticed her phone connecting to the hotel’s Wi-Fi network without any input from her.
The boyfriend immediately questioned Li, asking if she had previously visited the hotel with someone else.
Although Li insisted it was her first visit to the establishment, she couldn’t explain why her device connected automatically to the network.
Unable to resolve the disagreement, the man left her at the hotel, convinced she had been unfaithful.
Li later told Chongqing TV that even her friends doubted her story.

Determined to prove her innocence despite not wanting to reconcile with her ex-boyfriend, Li investigated the matter herself.

She discovered that another hotel in Chongqing where she had previously worked offered Wi-Fi with identical username and password credentials.
When Li attempted to explain this finding to her former partner, he refused communication and removed her contact from his chat application.
Li then contacted Chongqing TV to help corroborate her account.
A TV reporter conducted a test by first connecting to the Wi-Fi at Li’s former workplace, then visiting the hotel where the incident occurred.
The reporter’s phone also automatically connected to the Wi-Fi network at the second hotel, validating Li’s explanation.

A cybersecurity specialist surnamed Liu told Chongqing TV that smartphones commonly auto-connect to new Wi-Fi networks with matching usernames and passwords if the device has saved previous login information.
Liu advised people to disable the auto-save function as it poses potential security risks.
The incident generated significant support for Li on social media platforms, with many users criticizing her ex-boyfriend’s reaction.
“She should ditch him for not listening to her and not trusting her,” wrote one online commenter.
Another added: “So what, even if she had been to the hotel? Can she not date anyone before him?”
