Do you remember what it’s like to watch a movie at the cinema?
The smell of stale recycled air-conditioned air, the lush comforts of the cosy seats, and the taste of buttery popcorn.
There’s nothing quite like it.
But unless you’re watching Dolittle, watching a movie at the cinema involves a large group of people being nestled closely together for at least an hour and a half – the perfect conditions for the transmission of the coronavirus.
And so, one by one, countries took away this simple joy from its citizens to protect them from contracting the disease that has infected over 9 million people worldwide and killed more than 470,000.
Sure, we can still watch good movies on our laptops and large TV screens, but without a hundred other strangers crunching away on popcorn and laughing or screaming, it just isn’t the same.
While Singaporeans will have to wait a little longer to return to the theatre, our neighbours across the border will soon be able to catch the latest blockbusters on the big screen.
Cinemas in M’sia Will Finally Be Reopening on 1 July With Safe-Distancing Management
Cinemas and live events in Malaysia will be allowed to resume operations from 1 July, as long as they follow the standard operating procedures (SOP) and regulations specified by the government.
The announcement was made by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri in a live press conference on Sunday (22 June).
“We have decided to allow cinemas and live events to resume operations starting 1st July but only in closed environments and halls,” he said.
The defence minister said that the number of attendants at a theatre or live event cannot exceed 250 people for now.
“But this also depends on how big the event or cinema hall is”, he said.
He stressed that attendees should abide by the one-metre social distancing rule at all times.
“The SOPs when entering the premise will still apply,” added the minister.
This means that movie-goers will be required to wear masks, take their temperature, and sanitise their hands before entering.

Malaysia & S’pore Working On Reopening Borders
According to The Star, Singapore is also working with Malaysia to address the needs of cross-border travellers.
“Both countries will require some time to work out the details on the gradual easing of border restrictions to ensure a stable recovery from the Covid-19 situation.”
So, we might be able to cross the border for some delicious food and cheap shopping soon.
Reader: That’s great and all, but what about cinemas in Singapore?
Cinemas Can Reopen in Phase 2
Well, according to the Ministry of Health, entertainment venues like cinemas, bars, nightclubs, and karaoke outlets won’t have to wait for Phase 3 to resume operations.
When the authorities feel that it’s safe to do so, they will allow these venues to reopen with safe management measures in place.
So, who knows? Cinemas may reopen in time for us to watch Christopher Nolan’s latest movie Tenet.
Our fingers are crossed.
