In downtown San Francisco, one janitor for the Powell Street station of the US transit system reportedly earned a total of over S$385,000 in the entire year of 2015. That is, as written in the headline, over S$30k a month.

That astronomical income is actually even higher than medical professionals!

You don’t even need to guess. Yup, this guy is Chinese. Typical Asian hardworking stereotype, this Mr Liang Zhao Zhang is spoiling the market hardcore for the rest of us Asians. After this guy, it’s probably not even enough for us to be a lawyer or a doctor anymore. We’ll probably have to work 20 hours a day like our dear friend here to even make our parents proud.

Oh yeah, you read that right. This man cleaned the dirty US train station for 20 hours a day, for 18 consecutive days. In the entire year of 2015, he was paid for every single day. All 365 days.

His overtime pay was nearly three times of his normal pay.

How does one clean for 20 hours straight a day? Glad you asked, because this guy sure didn’t. According to 2 days’ worth of surveillance footage, Mr Liang was found to visit a particular storage closet multiple times a day, for up to 90 mins each time. When asked, he said he was ‘having lunch’. Yeah. ‘Having lunch’ multiple times a day, for nearly 1.5 hours each time.

His employer, the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), said employees are only given a 30-min break for lunch.

Go figure.

According to his boss, though, it is entirely possible to earn that much. Apparently, Mr Liang has never rejected any overtime work, and he completed all his assignments.

On a side note, there were at least 49 other janitors who earned more than US$100,000 in 2015. Basic janitor pay is nearly US$60,000 annually, which means there are about 50 janitors who worked so much overtime they more than doubled their original salaries.

Robert Fellner, from the non-profit organization, Transparent California, that found out about this, took offense to Mr Liang’s salary. He was quoted to have said, “It’s absolutely outrageous. For janitors that’s obscene!”

Thanks for your opinion, Mr Fellner. Do you work every day for a year straight, taking every single weekend overtime, then work for up to 20 hours a day? When a man can do that, I think he probably deserves that money.
