Are you sick of reading news that make you unhappy?
Maybe some little girl just got raped. Maybe a man was just murdered. Maybe a man slept with the bodies he murdered for a week.
Either way, you gradually lose faith in humanity and get annoyed of reading bad news.
Well, I agree.
Here’s some good and wholesome news for a change.
Cleaners in Singapore
My heart aches a little every time I see some elderly working as cleaners.
Whatever their situation is, it sucks to see that they’re unable to enjoy retirement peacefully at home.
Also, regardless of age, working as cleaners isn’t pleasant.
You clean up after the messiest and most inconsiderate of people for a low pay.
Various movements have been started around the country to make their lives easier, such as asking people to return their own trays after a meal.
However, the issue with their salary still remains. Until now, it seems.
Cleaners To Get Bonuses & Wage Increase
The Tripartite Cluster for Cleaners (TCC) recommended these bonuses and increases last November, and have since been approved by the Commissioner for Labour, and was announced yesterday (3 July 2019).
With the requirement that they must have had worked for their current employer continuously for the past 12 months, resident cleaners will receive bonuses from 1 Jan 2020 onward.
For all cleaners with licensed cleaning businesses countrywide, they will also receive a 3% annual wage increase starting 1 July 2020.
This is expected to be some really great news for over 40,000 cleaners employed by roughly 1,300 firms.
Progressive Wage Model
These measures are apparently part of the newly updated Progressive Wage Model which defines the minimum wages for varying job levels and wage increases.
The Ministry of Manpower also enforces cleaning businesses to follow the remuneration guidelines in order to be licensed.
On top of that, progressive wage plans must be followed and payslips issued must contain required details of basic wage and other payments.
Some of you might think 3% is too little or that this is some stunt by PAP for re-election, but I personally don’t care as long as it benefits the cleaners.
Let’s rejoice in some good news once in a while.
