Getting caught selling drugs in Singapore isn’t like parking illegally – you can actually be put to death for it.
As per Section 17 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, you are automatically presumed to be trafficking in drugs even if you are caught with extremely small amounts, such as 2 grams of heroin.
Yet, even though Singapore is one of the strictest countries when it comes to drug laws, some continue to peddle drugs in the country.
And a few are bold enough to carry truckloads of these banned substances.
Everything About the Largest Heroin Haul by CNB in 19 Years With Drugs That Worth Nearly $2 Million
Officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) seized 14.1kg of heroin – in what was its largest haul in 19 years – in a raid earlier this week.
A host of other drugs were seized in the raids, including:
- 2.9kg of “ice”, or methamphetamine
- 7.6kg of cannabis
- 323g of ecstasy fragments
- 28 ecstasy tablets
- 1,008 Erimin-5 tablets
In total, the drugs seized amounted to nearly $2 million. $12,629 in cash was also found in the raid.
The last time CNB seized such a large amount of heroin was in 2001, when they found a record 14.9kg of heroin in a single operation.
Trafficking more than 15g of heroin carries the death penalty in Singapore.
Three men and two women, aged between 29 and 55, were arrested.
Vehicle Intercepted, Officers Led Back to Hideout
It all started on Wednesday afternoon (11 Nov), when CNB officers intercepted a vehicle near Siglap Road.
Officers found 1.45kg of heroin in the vehicle, and smaller amounts of heroin, Ice, and Ecstasy on the driver and passengers.
Three Singaporeans – a 55-year-old male driver, a 50-year-old male and a 52-year-old female passenger – were arrested.
The female passenger then led officers to her hideout, where more drugs were recovered.
Follow-up Operation
On the same day, another CNB team conducted a separation operation at Bedok Reservoir Road.
There, they arrested a 35-year-old man who was found to have 2.78kg of heroin, 127g of Ice, 323g of Ecstasy fragments, and $629 in cash.
Officers then raided the man’s flat and found even more drugs, including 2.5kg of cannabis.
A 29-year-old PR was also arrested in the unit.
Officers later raided the man’s vehicle, and found 944g of heroin, 763g of Ice and more than 5kg of cannabis.
Drugs Seized Could Have Fed Over 7,000 Abusers For a Week
According to CNB, the drugs found could have fed the habit of 6,740 heroin abusers, 1,630 Ice abusers and 1,080 cannabis abusers for a week.
Even with Covid-19 restrictions, drug traffickers are still taking risks, Superintendent Aaron Tang, Director of Intelligence Division at CNB, said.
“These traffickers won’t stop trying. But neither will we let our guard down.”
