While some of you may be looking forward to the release of the new Captain America movie next year, there’s something else that another group of Singaporeans are waiting for.
And it’s none other than the iconic Chinese New Year films.
This upcoming CNY 2025, there will be three key films releasing in Singapore that you should look out for. Here’s everything you need to know about all of them.
Jack Neo’s CNY Movie About AI: I Want To Be Boss
The first movie you should look out for in CNY 2025 is Jack Neo’s upcoming CNY movie, titled “I Want To Be Boss”, or “AI Pin Cai Hui Ying” in Mandarin.
Yes, you read that right. It’s yet another Jack Neo CNY movie.
At this point, we think Jack Neo’s CNY traditions probably don’t have so much to do with pineapple tarts, ang paos, or whatnot. His CNY tradition is releasing a CNY movie.
What can we say? That’s a man dedicated to his craft lah.
The Mandarin name of the film plays on the name of the Hokkien hit song “Ai Pia Jia Eh Yia”. You’ve probably heard of the song before lah — maybe you yourself enjoy it, or maybe it’s a song that you commonly heard your mother or grandmother play in the past.
According to Lianhe Zaobao, the film will be centred on artificial intelligence (hence the mandarin wordplay, “AI Pin Cai Hui Ying”) and how it affects Singaporeans’ daily lives.
“Recently, everyone has been talking about AI. This is a very new subject. Although the market has adopted AI, I still hope that through the film, everyone can see the impact of AI on our daily lives and the interesting things that will happen,” Neo shared in an interview.
So, who’s going to be in the film? Well, the usual lah — Henry Thia, Patricia Mok, and Aileen Tan will all star in the film. Jack Neo will also have a cameo in the film.
Eh? What about Mark Lee? Isn’t he always in Jack Neo’s films?
Unfortunately, Mark Lee will not be involved in “I Want To Be Boss”. But spoiler alert: you’ll still see him in another movie this upcoming CNY 2025. We’ll tell you more about that later.
Jack Neo’s “I Want To Be Boss” will be released on 24 January 2025, so be sure to put your ang pao money to good use when the time comes.

The Sequel to Drag Queen Comedy Number 1: Number 2
So, about that movie starring Mark Lee… If you guessed that the movie is “Number 2”, you’re right. Another CNY film you can look forward to this CNY 2025 is titled “Number 2” or “Nan Er Wang” in Mandarin — the sequel to the drag queen comedy “Number 1”.
On Friday (20 December), the film’s official Instagram page released a teaser showing drag queens applying their makeup. In the caption, it states: “The queens are back and this time… they’re packing their bags for an exciting trip! Can you guess where they’re heading to?”
No, I don’t think we know where they’re headed to, but I guess that’s why we have to watch the film when it comes out lah…
If you’ve yet to watch “Number 1”, fret not, here’s what it briefly is about. “Number 1” featured Mark Lee as the lead character Chow Chee Beng, a man who takes on a job as a drag queen after being retrenched.
The drag queen comedy sequel, “Number 2”, will explore Chow’s family dynamics and his changing relationship with his son.
So, who’s involved in the film?
The film will once again be directed by Ong Kuo Sin, and will star not just Mark Lee, but also Malaysian star Jaspers Lai and Taiwanese transgender actress Kiwebaby.
According to Lianhe Zaobao, up to 80% of the film will be shot in Thailand. The rest of the film will likely be shot in Kuala Lumpur, and if needed, in Singapore as well.
While the film’s precise release date is unclear, you can be sure that the film will be released over CNY 2025. You can watch the teaser here:

Wang Wei Liang’s Debut as a Director: Baby Hero
Last but not least, this upcoming CNY, you can also look forward to the film “Baby Hero”.
The new action-comedy, which is a joint production between Singapore’s Hong Pictures and Bangkok-based Hollywood Thailand, will mark Wang Weiliang’s debut as a director.
Yes, you read that right. We’re talking about that Wang Weiliang — Singaporeans’ favourite “lobang” from the Ah Boys to Men series.
Truly, from “Ah Boys to Men” sia. We bet his relatives will have lots to ask him about during CNY gatherings next year.
So, what exactly is “Baby Hero” about? Well, the film will follow Sun, played by Thai actor Long Lee, who escapes back to his village hometown. Sun’s girlfriend Leena, played by Hayley Woo, makes a journey to Sun’s hometown, hoping to bring Sun back.
An adventure then unfolds, where Sun and his girlfriend have to work together to save the village.
You can also look forward to seeing other actors like Ya Hui and Vithaya Pansringarm in the new film. Wang Weiliang himself will be acting in the film as well.
Learning from Jack Neo, I see.
The film is set to release on 23 January 2025. You can watch the trailer for “Baby Hero” here:
So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to start making those CNY movie plans lah.
