What do you do when you were scammed by, say…John.
Would you:
- Talk to him nicely
- Call the police on him
- Do anything but try to lock him into a car to get your money back
If you were really good friends, you’ll probably go for option 1. If you’re not that close, option 2 is the way to go.
Unfortunately, for the four men that we’re going to talk about, they decided to go with option 4, the total opposite of option 3.
4 Men Arrested for Wrongfully Confinement of a Scammer in a Car in Little India
On 16 Aug 2020, four men aged between 31 and 33 forced a male victim into a car along a service road off Verdun Road.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the four men believed the victim was responsible for an e-commerce scam which one of them had purportedly lost money to.
They dragged him into the vehicle and confined him, hoping to recover the lost money.
Officers from the Central Police Division and the Criminal Investigation Department managed to establish their identities through extensive ground enquiries and investigations, and they were subsequently arrested on 17 Aug 2020.
Police investigations are ongoing and if found guilty, they could be facing up to three years in jail, a fine, or both.
Here’s What You Should Do If You Suspect Someone Of Scamming You
Now, if you, just like these 4 men, had lost money to an e-commerce scam, here’s what you should do instead.
Call the anti-scam hotline at 1800-722-6688. The hotline is maintained by the Singapore Police Force and the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC).
Now, if you’re sure that you’ve been scammed, you can file a police report and furnish them with whatever information you have, be it documents, screenshots or online conversations.
While it’s true that you might not be able to get back your money, the information provided can be used to warn others against falling for the same scam.
That’s better than landing in jail like these four guys, right?
