Something horrifying took place in Singapore recently. Singapore news reported of a pair of abusive parents abusing a 2-year-old boy to death yesterday and many locals have been showing emotions of anger, sadness and shock.
Daniel, the 2-year-old victim
Five weeks of abuse ultimately led to little 2-year-old Daniel dying from horrific abuse inflicted upon him by his own parents. He did not know much about the world except that his biological mother and her boyfriend would kick and slap him if he did not do as told. He was often punished and made to stand with his hands on his head for almost the whole day.
When he was unable to stand straight or got tired and wanted to merely rest his hands, it’ll result in multiple blows which would lead him to fall to the ground or bleed from his mouth.
The mother and her boyfriend
The biological mother, Zaidah and her boyfriend, Zaini live in a one-room flat with their daughter who was 1-year-old, landlord and the landlord’s niece.
The one big question that we have: why have the two housemates, who had witnessed the abuse, not done anything except to call for an ambulance on the day of Daniel’s death?
Reports on the case did not state, nor explain the details of the housemates.
The trial
According to todayonline.com, Deputy Public Prosecutor Claire Poh said that any older child may be more matured and strength to run away from any further torture but Daniel had no means of escape from the unit.
Violent, abusive behaviour leading to child’s death
The day before Daniel’s death, the family was having breakfast together but he refused to eat. That led to the adults becoming angry and proceeding to hit him. He fell and his mother then stomped on his chest.
He was sent to stand in a corner after refusing to eat more than 2 to 3 bites of food. After standing the whole day, Daniel leant against the bedframe at 7pm because he was fatigued from standing the whole day. He got several slaps to his face before he fell to the ground with his eyes closed.
Zaini force fed the victim with spoonfuls of dried chilli before forcing him to continue standing. Almost 2 hours later, Daniel became weaker and could not continue to stand. Zaidah pinched and slapped him before complaining to her boyfriend that Daniel was pretending to act weak in order to avoid punishment.
Zaini then slapped and kick the boy which led to Daniel falling and hitting his head. He was force fed chilli again at that time.
The next day, Daniel could not be woken up but the couple decided to leave him be. The landlord and the niece called for an ambulance but Daniel had given in to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 9.11am on 23rd November 2015.
Parents sought to protect themselves
After the ambulance and police arrived, the couple said that Daniel had a habit of pinching himself and could not be woken up as he fell in the toilet.
After getting arrested and brought to court, it was mentioned that the couple had no reactions when shown the multiple injuries that Daniel had gotten before his death.
They were more concerned with protecting themselves and even went home to watch television after being questioned by the police. What?!
The verdict
The court called for at least a 9-year jail term and 9-12 strokes of the cane for Zaini and a more severe punishment for Zaidah with an additional 9-12 months jail term.
No news has yet been said with regards to the landlord and niece as they were witnesses to the abuse. Netizens are enraged and said that the couple should be given a harsher sentence.
