Our COVID-19 situation in August has become something of a new experience, one that we’re still coming to grips with.
Previously, we reported a COVID-19 fatality every now and then, with significant periods of time in between deaths.
In August alone, however, eight people have died.
As sad as it is, it was expected, due to the coronavirus outbreak in the community last month, where we saw over a hundred new cases a day.
With more infections, a small proportion is bound to suffer severe illness, especially if they’re not vaccinated against the disease.
Unfortunately, yet another COVID-19 patient died yesterday.
64YO Man Dies From COVID-19 Complications
A 64-year died from COVID-19 complications on Monday (16 Aug), becoming Singapore’s ninth fatality this month.
On 2 Aug, the man developed a cough and was taken to Raffles Hospital after suffering from heart problems.
He ended up succumbing to the disease around two weeks later.
The man had a history of End-stage renal failure, ischaemic cardiomyopathy, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. He was not vaccinated against COVID-19.
46 COVID-19 patients in Singapore have now died from the virus.
49 Locally Transmitted Cases
49 new locally transmitted cases were reported yesterday, of whom 19 were unlinked.
Four imported cases were detected as well, taking yesterday’s total case count to 53 infections. Three were detected upon arrival in Singapore, while the remaining one developed the illness during SHN or isolation.
1 New Cluster; Several Existing Clusters Grow
One new cluster was identified yesterday, linked to an individual case. It has five infections.
Several existing clusters grew, including the one at Westlite Juniper Dormitory which now has 66 cases after one new infection was added to it.
One new case each was also added to the Sengkang Bus Interchange staff cluster and cluster at My First Skool at Block 54.
The first now has 20 infections, while the preschool cluster has 38.
402 Cases in Hospital; 6 in ICU
At the moment, there are 402 COVID-19 cases warded in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.
26 severe cases currently require oxygen supplementation, while six are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Of the 32 cases, 27 of them were patients above the age of 60, five of which were fully vaccinated.
As the Ministry of Health (MOH) reiterated, evidence shows that almost all fully vaccinated patients do not suffer serious disease from COVID-19, unless they had underlying conditions which them more susceptible to the disease.
Vaccination Progress: 77%
Just like a video game on an incredibly old console, our vaccination progress is increasing slowly but surely every few days.
77% of our population is now fully vaccinated, while 82% have received at least one dose.
This includes 84,172 recipients of 153,020 doses of other vaccines recognised in the World Health Organization’s Emergency Use Listing.
More COVID-19 Measures Eased Today (19 Aug)
As the authorities said, more measures would be eased (19 Aug) today if our COVID-19 situation remains stable.
These include allowing 50% of the workforce to return to the office, which, depending on how many kids they have, will either please or frustrate them.
Event sizes and capacity limits will also increase, with live performances of 1,000 attendees allowed if all are vaccinated.
