The coronavirus simply does not give up easily.
After more than two weeks of zero locally transmitted infections, Covid-19 community cases have been on the rise.
And while the numbers are still low compared to previous months, the placement of some of these infections are concerning.
Latest COVID-19 Community Case is a Cleaner in Changi Airport & It is a Fresh Infection
One of the two community cases reported on Tuesday (1 Dec) is a 66-year-old woman who works as a cleaner at the transit area of Changi Airport Terminal 3, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said.
She was detected through the authorities’ bi-weekly routine testing of workers at the frontline.
She was asymptomatic and is currently unlinked.
Moreover, her serological test result is negative, which indicates that it’s likely a fresh infection. All her previous swab tests as part of the rostered routine testing returned negative results.
“At work, she dons personal protective equipment, including a face mask, face shield, gloves and gown,” MOH said.
All airport workers who come into close contact with travellers have been required to wear full personal protection equipment after two people who worked at Terminal 3 tested positive for Covid-19 in October.
This is part of several safety measures put in place to protect frontline workers at the airport.
As always, the woman’s identified close contacts have been placed under quarantine, and will be tested at the end of their quarantine period.
They will also undergo serological tests to determine if the woman could have been infected by them.
First Dormitory Case Since 10 Nov
There’s more bad news.
The other Covid-19 community case is from a foreign workers’ dormitory, the first since 10 Nov.
The dormitory case was also asymptomatic and was detected through surveillance testing.
All his close contacts at the dormitory and workplace have been isolated and placed under quarantine.
Imported Cases
Nowadays, the main source of our infections is from abroad, and that didn’t change on Tuesday.
A total of eight imported cases were reported, of whom one was a special pass holder who entered Singapore from Indonesia.
He was arrested by the Police Coast Guard for his suspected involvement in a prior case.
The other imported cases include a work pass holder from Japan and five work permit holders from Indonesia and Myanmar.
The remaining case was a long-term visit pass holder – a one-year-old boy who arrived from Russia – who’s a contact of a previous case.
99% of Cases in Singapore Recovered From Covid-19
Here’s a statistic that’ll put you at ease.
99% of the Covid-19 cases in Singapore have recovered from the disease.
At the time of writing, the country has reported 58,228 Covid-19 cases, of which 58,139 have recovered.
Moreover, at just 0.04%, we have the lowest Covid-19 death rate in the world.
At the moment, there are 29 people in hospital with the coronavirus. Thankfully, all are stable or improving.
No one is in the intensive care unit.
The remaining cases are being cared for at community facilities. They either have mild symptoms, or are clinically well but still test positive for Covid-19.
