As the epidemic sweeps the entire globe with aplomb, one single accessory has become a must-have:

Face masks.

And before you pose the inevitable question, it’s for good reason.

See, though face masks (admittedly) do little to protect a user from air transmission, it does help to prevent a user from spreading the virus.

Which may lead to the question:

Just how vital, in that case, is it in securing protection for our kind amid the current Coronavirus outbreak?

Well, here’s a rough response. If the following article is to be any indicator…

I would say that a face mask is important.

Really important… to the cause.

2 Hairdressers With COVID-19 Didn’t Pass The Virus to All Their Clients Due to Masks & Safe-Distancing

According to Livescience, two hairstylists – who tested positive for Covid-19 – have somehow achieved the impossible:

Out of a total of 139 clients and six coworkers they interacted with, none caught the virus.

Absolutely incredible, considering the viral contagious rate of the pathogen.

And it seems that face masks might have more than a little to do with this particular ‘phenomenon’.

According to the news report, the stylists operate at a Great Clips salon in Springfield, where various safety measures have been implemented to mitigate potential Covid-19 spread.

For instance, appointment times were staggered, and salon chairs were distanced.

Stylists were also required to stay at least 6 feet (1.8 meters) away from their clients when not cutting their hair.

In addition, stylists and customers must wear masks during appointments. During their interactions, Stylist A wore a double-layered cotton face covering, while Stylist B wore either a double-layered cotton face covering or a surgical mask.

After the stylists tested positive for the virus, the 139 clients, as well as six employees, were offered free diagnostic tests.

In total, 67 people underwent diagnostic testing, and none of them tested positive. During their 2-week quarantine period, none of the clients reported symptoms, which led to an intriguing conclusion.

Face Masks

Naturally, this soon led to heartfelt sentiments about the use of facial coverings. Clay Goddard (director of the health department), for one, did not conceal his excitement.

“This is exciting news about the value of masking to prevent COVID-19,” he said.

And the authors of the original MMWR report have concurred, stating that the use of face coverings in public have indeed contributed to the reduced spread of SARS-CoV-2.

“These results support the use of face coverings in places open to the public, especially when social distancing is not possible, to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2,” the authors of the MMWR report concluded.

This would certainly fall in line with a statement previously made by US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Robert Redfield.

On Tuesday (14 July), the director issued a bold statement, indicating that the rising cases of Covid-19 in the United States could be under control within four to eight weeks as long as all Americans wore a mask.

“I think if we can get everyone to wear masks right now, we can bring this under control within four, six, eight weeks,” Redfield told the Journal of the American Medical Association in an online interview.

Well, it looks like the local government’s decision to incorporate face masks (as part of our daily routines) has been somewhat validated, if not in its entirety. And though the coverings do get a little stuffy in the long run, we can take solace in the ‘fact’ that, at the very least…

We are getting a rough ‘protection buff’ from it.

And so, with that said, remember to stay safe…

And have your mask on at all times in public. Because it certainly seems to help.
