With the election out of the way, it’s time to focus on something that might be a tad more pressing: COVID-19.

In the midst of reading about the elections, did you know that there were a whopping 24 community cases yesterday (11 July)?

Are you making your way to the supermarket now? Hold your horses.

Today, a total of 178 cases are reported.

However, there is only one community case – a Singaporean.

In addition, there is one imported case who had been placed on stay-home notice upon arrival in Singapore.

A majority of the cases are residents in dormitories.

Based on yesterday’s number, on average, the number of new cases in the community has increased, from an average of 9 cases per day in the week before, to an average of 19 per day in the past week.

The number of unlinked cases in the community has also increased, from an average of 5 cases per day in the week before, to an average of 9 per day in the past week.

Also, yesterday, we got to know that there might be a possible transmission in a setting that’s been discussed to death: a school.

Possible Transmission in Jurong West Secondary School

Early last month, when schools started to reopen, the Education Minister has already mentioned that when a cluster occurred in a school, the school might be closed but other schools will remain open.

Yesterday, there’s a possible transmission of the coronavirus, though it’s not a cluster. Yet.

A 13-year-old girl at Jurong West Secondary School has tested positive for Covid-19, and she is reportedly linked to a previous case from the same school – a 13-year-old boy who tested positive on 6 July.

She has since been on Home Quarantine Order (HQO) by MOH since 6 July, and was confirmed to be positive just recently as part of MOH’s expanded testing regime.

Around 70 students and staff members (who were verified to be close contacts of the earlier case) have tested negative for the virus. Though as a result of this latest case, another six students and four employees will be given home quarantine orders.

Disinfection and cleaning of premises have been conducted in the school since last weekend. And in light of the most recent case, the school has undergone further disinfection.

According to MOE, as an added precaution, “the HBL period for Secondary 1 students will be extended till next week (Jul 13 to 18) before the start of the one-week mid-term break.”

Lest you’re not aware, due to the Circuit Breaker, the mid-year school holidays had been brought forward to May, and the mid-term break is now on 20 July to 26 July—which is, of course, different from the one you see on your calendar.

In other words, secondary one students in Jurong West Secondary School won’t need to go to school for two weeks.
