Competitive cooking shows have grown in popularity ever since “MasterChef” hit our screens.
Many viewers seem to enjoy watching skilled chefs get verbally battered by judges who are rarely impressed. (You know who I mean.)
But since they are the experts, we rarely go against them.
This wasn’t the case for one competitive baking show on Channel 8, however.
Viewers Upset About “Unfair” Verdict in Channel 8 Baking Contest
A recent episode of the competitive baking show “Crème De La Crème” has whipped up some displeasure.
Some viewers seem displeased about a certain verdict delivered by the show’s judges, veteran actresses Fann Wong and Jeanette Aw.
In the semi-finals of the competition, four contestants were asked to recreate a strawberry tart by dessert chef Janice Wong within one-and-a-half hours.
During the presentation process, one contestant, Ean, mistakenly took the mousse base that was made by another contestant, Angie.
All four contestants’ bases had been prepped and placed in the freezer earlier, and Ean retrieved the mousse base before Angie.
When Ean discovered that he had taken Angie’s mousse by mistake, it was too late as he had already used it in his dessert.
The judges asked them if they wanted to make another batch of mousse, but both of them declined, saying they had already made a failed batch before the mix-up.
So, Angie decided to use Ean’s mousse.
Unfortunately for Angie, she was unable to fully remove the cling wrap from the mousse after the freezing process.
So when she served it to the judges, there were pieces of cling wrap in the mousse base of her strawberry tart.
Since cling wrap wasn’t part of the recipe, the judges eliminated Angie.
And then, to put it eloquently, poop was acquainted with the fan.
Elimination Was “Unfair”
Several netizens let Wong and Aw know on their Instagram accounts that they thought their elimination of Angie was “unfair”.
Some pointed out that the tainted mousse that led to her elimination was not hers to begin with, so making it a deal-breaker was not fair.
Mediacorp’s Response
In response to the backlash, Wong said that both contestants agreed to use the mousse that the other had prepared, and that the judges respected their decision.
“I also hope that the contestants won’t pay too much attention to the opinions of others. The contest is a journey for them to learn and gain experience and it is not the destination. There’s still a long path ahead for everyone,” Wong said.
Mediacorp also issued a statement over the incident, noting that coloured labels were used to identify all the contestants’ trays.
“When contestants Ean and Angie took the wrong trays of mousse, they were given the option to prepare their mousse again, but they mutually agreed to continue with using each other’s mousse,” it told Mothership.
“Hence, the competition proceeded and the judges’ decisions are final.”
The media network added that it does not condone cyberbullying.
In an Instagram post, Angie revealed that Ean has been receiving unkind comments since the episode aired last week.

She asked netizens to “take it easy”.
“Being a friend of Ean, I truly hope that everyone can take it easy on this incident. Seeing a friend get caught in such a difficult position is really painful, I believe most of you could relate to us,” she wrote.
“As a chef, I am responsible to make sure I have checked my dish throughly before serving, this could not be anyone else’s fault.”
