Customer Found Centipede in His Kang Kong; Kopitiam Says It’s Not Hygiene Issues

When ordering cai png (mixed vegetable rice), we often hope (subconsciously) that the seller will give out more when loading our plates because let’s face it:

We all want free stuff. And also one portion’s not enough to sustain us till dinner.

However, as it is, reality’s quite a lofty bitch. Granted, some cai png assistants do give out more, but more often than not they’re only shelled out to the following qualifying contestants:

  • Girls
  • Long-time customers
  • Girls
  • Celebrities
  • Girls

So as you can kind of tell, the normal folks (pretty much guys in general) aren’t gonna get more. And that’s borderline sexism, seeing how according to studies guys need more calories a day than females in order to function. In short…

We want more food.

Newsflash: Customer Found Centipede in His Kang Kong, Kopitiam Says It’s Not Hygiene Issues

You know what, ladies should get all the perks. 🙂

What happened?

On Tuesday (23 Oct), Faz Yusof was having a plate of mixed rice alongside his colleagues at Plaza Sing’s Kopitiam, when he stumbled upon a little extra ingredient:

A dead centipede.

Alarmed, he showed the food to the staff members, who promptly threw it away and offered them a refund of $3.50. The incident occurred in the afternoon, at around 2:30 p.m.

He has since reported the incident to the National Environment Agency.

Quickly

In an interview with Channel NewsAsia, Kopitiam expressed that the foot court took immediate actions.

According to Kopitiam corporate communications manager Vincent Cheong, the affected dish, a plate of Kang Kong as well as other food on display, were thrown away.

“Kopitiam’s hygiene department was activated to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the food stall,” he said. He also added that there was a lack of evidence to suggest that the centipede had been a result of poor housekeeping.

“(There was a) high probability that it was hidden among the vegetable supplied and was missed out during the washing and sorting process,” Mr Cheong said.

Lest you’re curious, investigation procedures included reviewing the stall’s housekeeping, food storage methods, food preparation and food handling procedures.

Close monitoring

It’s highly understandable if you wish to boycott the stall from hereon, but if Kopitiam’s intentions are to be believed, it should be safe to consume.

“Good food hygiene and food safety standards are of utmost importance to Kopitiam. We do not condone any lapses and will not hesitate to take drastic action against any errant stall holders,” said Mr Cheong.

Kopitiam will continue to closely monitor the stall, and conduct a thorough spring cleaning of the food stall as a precautionary measure.

Netizens React To: Kopitiam Centipedes

Following the news outbreak, Netizens reacted with largely different perspectives.

Some, for some sarcastic reason, treated it as an extra ‘delicacy’.

While others smelled a rat.

Or in this case, a centipede.

And some, for lack of a better phrase, stirred the pot.

Moral of the story

It’s best not to hope for more when buying cai png.

Because rather than getting some extra sweet & sour pork, you might just get…

A sweet and sour centipede instead.

Unless, of course, you’re Bear Grylls.

Then it’s a different story altogether.

The centipede’s not raw? DISGUSTING.

Centipede Looks Scary But They’re Pretty Harmless

Despite it looking like a monster from Resident Not Evil, it’s actually relatively harmless. The misconception is that they’ve venom in their bite, which is true but their bite is not life-threatening.

Though, of course, we’re not sure if eating them is goody or not lah.
