It’s not often described this way, but operating a vehicle on the road requires a certain level of maturity.
Anyone can learn the necessary skills to drive a car or ride a motorbike, but the fact that motorists hold the lives of others in their hands is often lost on many.
This is why they give into distractions while driving, such as using their phone, eating, and worst of all, consuming alcohol.
The dangerous effects of alcohol on driving have been well-documented, but some people continue to engage in this risky behaviour.
And what ends up happening, more often than not, is that someone gets hurt.
14-Year-Old Cyclist Knocked Down By Car Driver Who Allegedly Reeked Of Alcohol At Telok Blangah
A 14-year-old cyclist was knocked down by a car on Saturday (4 Sep) while riding along Telok Blangah Road at about 3am.
According to Lianhe Wanbao, the young teenager was “touring” West Coast along with two of his friends at the time. One of the boy’s uncles was initially with them, but later parted ways with the trio.
While they were riding, a silver car had suddenly cut into their lane. At the same time, the 14-year-old was trying to dodge some potholes which were on the road.
In swerving to avoid the potholes, the boy inadvertently placed himself in the line of the oncoming silver car, causing the two to collide.
The collision threw the boy off his feet and the hard landing caused several injuries.
“We were all terrified,” one of the boy’s friends told Wanbao.
Subsequently, a male driver got out of the offending car to check on the boy and ask if he needed help.
However, the young boy, who was presumably in shock, was unable to respond. The driver then picked up his broken licence plate, returned to his car, and drove off.
One of the other riders said he noticed that the driver reeked of alcohol and that his face was flushed.
The three riders didn’t take pictures of the driver or the car, however, as they were frightened.
Admitted to Hospital With Multiple Bruises
The victim’s friend said the teenager sustained several severe bruises, including ones on his right eye, forehead, hands, and feet.
The 14-year-old’s friends had taken a photo of him (which you can view here) to share on social media, with the hope of other witnesses coming forward.
Speaking to the Chinese daily, the injured teen said he was admitted to the hospital but is now in good condition.
The hospital has since reported the case to the police, who are now investigating the matter.
Penalties for Drink-Driving
Because of how dangerous it is, drink-driving is not taken lightly by the authorities.
First-time offenders could face a fine of between $2,000 and $10,000, up to one year in jail, or both.
Repeat offenders face fines of between $5,000 and $20,000 and up to two years’ jail.
Offenders will also be disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence for at least two years, or at least 5 years for repeat offenders.
