Go-Ahead Investigating After Cyclist Blocked Bus With His Bicycle

Some drivers hate to see cyclists on the road for all sorts of reasons — newer drivers could be a little nervous about having to overtake these cyclists, while some more experienced drivers would tell you that these cyclists are blocking the way.

The sentiments of the latter group aren’t exactly misplaced. After all, there have been several incidents where cyclists have caused trouble to other road users, be it for failing to follow road signs or simply cycling erratically.

And last week, an incident in Punggol was added to this laundry list of incidents. A cyclist was seen holding up a bus by blocking the bus’ way using his bicycle. He had allegedly veered onto the bus’s path.

Cyclist in Punggol Blocks Bus Using His Bicycle

On Tuesday (26 November), a post surfaced on the Facebook group “Complaint Singapore” which drew the ire of many Singaporeans. The post showed a video of a cyclist holding up a bus by blocking it using his bicycle.

The bus in question was bus service 85, which travels between Punggol Temporary Interchange and Yishun interchange, and is operated by Go-Ahead Singapore.

The bus was stopped in the last lane of a four-lane road leading up to an intersection between Punggol Field and Punggol East, which is just down the road from Punggol Plaza and Punggol 21 Community Club.

From the video, a man donning a white singlet and black shorts (who is presumably the cyclist) was also seen to be stood by the driver’s side of the bus, and appeared to be arguing with the bus driver.

Point finger here there, etc. You know the drill lah.

Go-Ahead Singapore: Cyclist Allegedly Veered into Bus’s Path; Currently Under Investigation

While it’s unclear from the Facebook post how exactly the cyclist found himself in front of the bus in the first place, the operator of bus service 85, Go-Ahead Singapore, has since shared a little about how it happened.

Apparently, the cyclist was cycling on the lane next to the bus and suddenly veered into the bus’s path.

“This action compromised the safety of all parties — the cyclist, the bus captain, commuters on board the bus and other road users. Safety is our top priority and we take this incident very seriously,” the bus operator shared. It added that the incident is currently under investigation.

Well, Go-Ahead isn’t wrong. Aside from veering into the bus’s path, it also appears that the cyclist wasn’t wearing a helmet — an observation which was also noted by the Facebook user who posted the video.

“Pity the bus driver… this road pest didn’t even wear helmet but want to argue,” the caption on the Facebook post read.

If you didn’t already know, cyclists must wear a helmet when cycling on roads.

As the Land Transport Authority (LTA) always says lah — roads are shared spaces; whether we are driving, walking or cycling, we should always take note of the safety of other road users.
