Cyclist Thumped Car & Pointed Middle Finger at Car Which Overtook Him Along YCK Road

Another day, another car versus cyclist episode.

This time along Yio Chu Kang road leading to an Esso petrol kiosk.

The Incident

According to a video uploaded onto Roads.sg Facebook page, this incident took place on 26/3/19 at 9.59 a.m.

At this moment of writing, the video has garnered 45K views and 479 comments. Which, of course, isn’t as high as the cyclist vs lorry story. Maybe this has become a norm?

The Lowdown

The video begins with the front dashcam footage from a car travelling along Yio Chu Kang road.

The video text, edited into the video by the video’s poster itself, claims that the car was travelling at 40km/h.

A few seconds into the video, a cyclist in blue comes into view.

In the next short GIF sequence and accompanied by video texts, the driver claims to have overtaken the cyclist, only after signalling left for the cyclist to notice.

He then appears to decelerate and make a left turn into an Esso petrol kiosk.

As the car appears to be easing into the Esso station, the rear-view dashcam shows the cyclist catching up with the car, sticking out his middle finger and giving a thump on the car’s boot.

An audible “thud” can be heard upon impact and as the car comes to a full stop, the driver can be heard opening his door and shouting “Hey, come back.”

The video ends shortly after.

Missing Seconds and Reaction Time

This GIF further shows the distance between the cyclist and the car upon the overtaking.

Whether or not there’s ample time/space to allow for the cyclist to adjust cannot be conclusively gathered from the video.

There also seems to be a small 2-second section edited from the video, evinced by the weird twitch in time stamp on the bottom right of the video.

Who’s Right and/or Who’s Wrong?

A significant number blamed the driver for this incident.

There seems to be a near-universal consensus that the driver’s inconsiderate driving led to the cyclist’s outburst.

That said, the cyclist aggression and frankly speaking, unlawful retaliation was not lost on some.

An off-tangent discussion on whether cyclists deserved using the roads as they do not pay road taxes was quickly shut down by the moderators at Roads.sg.

Lastly, it appears the moderators at Roads.sg hit the nail on the head when calling for more courtesy and patience on the roads.

Honestly, this incident wouldn’t have taken place if the driver had more patience.

This is not to condone the cyclist’s action and besides, I’m a driver and non-cyclist myself.

At this point in time and echoing what Roads.SG moderators have said, we do indeed to have more kindness, patience and courtesy, on the roads or not.

Hello, Singa the Lion, haven’t heard from you in a while, is it time for yet another massive campaign?
