Cycling in Singapore is starting to look like a dangerous hobby or at least it might not be as safe as we used to think.
This is in spite of the fact that cycling is a mode of transport greatly favoured by many, especially considering the government’s push for its citizens to go car-less.
11-year-old cyclist rammed by a bus while crossing the road

On Apr 22 at around 4:20pm, SG Road Vigilante reported that an accident had occurred at the intersection between Yishun Ave 1 and Yishun Street 41.
The accident involves an 11-year-old cyclist and an SBS Transit bus, likely the 804 bus as indicated by the comments.
According to the post, the bus is exiting Yishun Street 41 and entering Yishun Ave 1 by turning left.
But oddly enough, instead of using the slip road like you’re supposed to, the bus turned left at the light.
At that same time, an 11-year-old cyclist is crossing the road, thinking that it’s safe to do so.
The cyclist was rammed by the bus instead.
The bicycle ended up being crushed under the bus, but the cyclist managed to escape the same fate – he/she (only) sustained an injury on the leg.
The police and ambulance were called.

The injured cyclist was sent to the hospital, and from the photos uploaded to SG Road Vigilante, the police could be seen directing traffic at the scene.
Beside the stopped bus, another cyclist could also be seen with some passers-by, tapping on her phone.
The adult female cyclist might be related to the 11-year-old and might be cycling with the victim when the accident happened.
Cyclists getting ran over by busses in Singapore
Just earlier this month, another bus, the 985, ran over an 80-year-old cyclist carrying cardboards on Boon Keng Road.
Investigations are still ongoing.

In another case, a Filipino cyclist, who was an aircraft technician, was killed after being rammed into an SBS Transit bus and then dragged for 30m.
The accident happened just last month in Loyang. He left behind a wife and two kids.
The bus driver involved in the accident has been arrested for careless driving that resulted in death.
The bus company claimed that “the bus was travelling straight and about to make a right turn at the traffic junction which was green in its favour when the accident occurred.”
The investigation is still underway here as well.
