Man Who Drowned in S’pore River Had Allegedly Swum There For a Dare During 7th Month

The 7th month is one that’s fraught with superstitions and beliefs of every kind. For instance, it’s inadvisable for individuals to swim during this period of time, as it’s believed that vengeful spirits exist beneath the waters.

But not everyone opts to trust in such a superstitious notion.

Man Who Drowned in S’pore River Had Allegedly Swum There For a Dare During 7th Month

On 22 August 2021, 45-year-old Raysan Ace accepted a dare to cross the Singapore River… at night.

The challenge was allegedly issued by an anonymous Facebook account known as Chiongsters SG.

Despite many of his friends and family advising otherwise, Raysan ultimately went through with it, claiming that he was unable to turn it down.

The 45-year-old proceeded to livestream the event on his Facebook account on 27 August 2021.

The video has since been taken down.

In the video, Raysan could be seen removing his shirt, before introducing himself to the camera.

Telling viewers not to replicate his stunt, he went down the stairs and approached the waters.

He then took the plunge.

Raysan could be seen going until around the 4-minute mark, before the footage became overly dark.

The video reportedly went on for over 20 minutes.

SCDF

At around 11:45 p.m. on 27 August, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) reportedly received a call for assistance.

The Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) was swiftly deployed, and divers were sent underwater to search the surroundings.

They subsequently extracted a body roughly 60m from shore, at a depth of some 3m.

Raysan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigations are current ongoing.

Prior Instances

This isn’t the first time that an unconventionally timed swimming incident had turned out awry.

Back in March 2021, a 21-year-old man drowned in a canal in Serangoon in the wee hours of the morning.

As reported by Lianhe Wanbao, the young man had gone swimming with his friends at around 5:00 am at the canal next to Block 477C at Upper Serangoon Crescent.

The victim’s friends did not hear any shouting or signs of distress during the incident.

After realising that he had gone missing, they alerted the police at around 5:45 am.

Divers from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART), as well as an underwater Remotely-Operated Vehicle (ROV), were swiftly deployed. The latter aided in the search by using sonar-imaging equipment to map out the underwater terrain.

The two divers then retrieved a body 6m from shore, at a depth of 2m.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic.
