Survey Shows More S’porean Women Prefer Taller & Richer Men; Less Likely to Date Men Who Earn Less

What do women want?

What do men want?

These are the questions we’ve been trying to answer since humans developed the ability to ask questions.

Instead of dating several people to gain experience about a certain gender, there’s a much simpler way to find out what they want in their partners.

Just do a survey.

Survey Shows S’porean Women Prefer Taller & Richer Men; Less Likely to Date Men Who Earn Less

Singaporean women seem to prefer men who are taller and richer than them, according to a survey conducted by matchmaking agency Lunch Actually.

The annual survey was conducted over two weeks across Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.

Over 3,500 singles participated in the survey, with 690 from Singapore. There was an equal number of male and female respondents.

Out of all these countries, women in Singapore were the least likely to date a guy who is shorter than them and earn less.

While 40% to 41% of female respondents from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand said they would date a man with lower earning power, only 39% of Singaporean women said they would do so.

Conversely, women from Hong Kong were most likely to date men who earned less than them, with 59% of female respondents saying they would.

So, what do the men think?

Most Singaporean Men More Open To Dating Women Who Earn More

On the other hand, 87% of men in Singapore said they were open to date women who earned more.

A similar trend was observed across the countries, as over 80% of male respondents in other countries said they would do so as well.

However, men were less likely than women to go out with someone who had been married before: 67% of women said they would do so, compared to 61% of men.

Looks, Looks, Looks

As for physical attributes, most Singaporean women prefer to date someone taller than them, as only 20% of female respondents said they would date someone shorter.

This was the lowest figure across all the countries surveyed, but not much lower than the rest.

The percentages of women across the four other countries who would date shorter men ranged from 21 to 31%.

Conversely, 66% of men were willing to date a woman taller than them.

Neither male nor female respondents in Singapore seemed too concerned about political beliefs, though, as 80% of them said they would date someone with different political opinions.

“Different Genders Look For Different Things”

Lunch Actually’s co-founder Violet Lim told TODAYonline that the results were not surprising, and that it didn’t mean Singaporean women were shallow or materialistic.

“(Our agency) has been doing this for the last 15 years and at the end of the day, different genders look for different things.”

She said, for instance, that women may prefer taller men because they feel more secure around them.

Similarly, men may prefer women with long hair as it could be a sign of fertility.

As for the preference for someone who earns more, Lim explained that women don’t want to downgrade their lifestyle, and so would prefer to date someone who earns the same or more than them.

One woman who spoke to TODAY said that while she was open to dating someone who earned less, she was afraid that her partner might feel insecure, and become disparaging or controlling to compensate.
