History of Abuse Despite Protection Order

The victim, Chen’s 70-year-old mother, lived in the same housing unit as her daughter. Since August 2023, the mother had a personal protection order prohibiting her daughter from abusing her.

In the morning of 23 Aug 2024, the mother called the police, reporting that her daughter had repeatedly asked her for money and threatened her.

Court documents showed that around 7:40 AM that day, Chen knocked on her mother’s bedroom door, demanding $150 in cash without explaining why she needed it. When her mother refused, Chen pushed her right shoulder with her left palm.

Fearing for her own safety, the mother decided to leave home. As she was preparing to leave, Chen grabbed her arm and repeatedly asked her to borrow money from others.

During the struggle, the mother lost her balance and felt pain in her right knee.

The mother then went downstairs to call the police.

Escalating Threats and Violence

In October 2024, the mother’s personal protection order was amended to include a clause prohibiting Chen from entering her bedroom.

On 18 Feb 2025 evening, the mother filed a report at Woodlands East Neighbourhood Police Centre, stating that Chen had demanded $140 at home and threatened to push or even kill her if she didn’t provide the money.

Out of fear, she handed over $140.

On the evening of 3 Mar 2025, the mother again called police, reporting that Chen had physically abused her when she refused to give money.

Investigation showed that around 9:55 PM that night, while the mother was doing laundry on the balcony, Chen approached her asking for $150. When the mother refused, Chen pushed her back and left arm.

The amended personal protection order was still in effect when this happened.

The next day, police arrested Chen. In her plea in court, she said she would change her ways after being released from prison.
