Hands up if your new year resolutions for this year involves plenty of running and weight loss.

Not that you’ll achieve them, of course. But the fact that you’ve made them in the first place.

Because if you did, I’ve got something pretty awesome to tell you.

The IKEA of sports is coming to you at Kallang.

What the heck are you talking about?

Okay. First things first, remember Decathlon?

Yes, the sports mega-store that sells everything you need when it comes to hiking, running, soccer-ing and more.

For cheap.

Well, they’ve opened a fourth outlet at Stadium Boulevard, and it’s going to be the most exciting Decathlon outlet you’ve ever seen.

Behold the 5,000 sqm playground that just opened up at Stadium Boulevard.

Calling it the Singapore Decathlon Lab, it’s filled with an indoor patch of land with four different textures to test out running shoes, a hiking track to test hiking boots, robots for stock-taking and a conveyer belt for online purchases.

There’s Free Health Assessment There Too

You’re always told, especially if you’re fat like my boss, to see a doctor before taking part in any physical activities.

In the store, they’ve partnered up with Sports Singapore to give shoppers free health assessments.

Plus, with plenty of space, there are free-to-play areas in the store too.

They’re Going For Experiential Shopping

So why is the fourth outlet called a “lab”?

That’s because it’s a playground for them.

Okay, not in those exact words.

But to Decathlon, “a lab is a disruptive and innovative place where we test new solutions”.

In other words, you can expect new and fun experience at the store in the years to come.

They have a water zone where you can try stand-up paddles, a ball zone where you can kick and throw the ball before buying it in addition to a hiking track and an area to try out running shoes.

“We have to give new reasons for customers to come back to our store.”

People Want To Exercise But…

Sports stuff can be pretty pricey.

What Decathlon wants to do is to become the “IKEA” of sports in Singapore. Products like Adidas and Nike has been the staple in the sports scene for a long time.

What they want to do is to provide cheaper alternatives for people looking to get their feet wet, or simply those that are not brand-conscious.

“Decathlon is offering cheaper alternatives for people who are just getting into sports or not so concerned about the brand or having the latest sneaker, and just want something functional. They’ve filled a gap in the market – it’s like shopping in an Ikea, (where) you go there and you’ve got everything in one place.

“To have a retail supplier out there providing sports clothing and shoes at a price that allows so many of these people to access is definitely beneficial.”

Online Shopping Made Easy

And it’s not just offline shopping the sports brand is looking at.
