Food Delivery Rider Now In ICU Due to Accident; Family Appealing for Witnesses

Many of us take road safety for granted, but it only takes a second of negligence for us to lose everything we hold dear.

Chauffeurs and food delivery riders are more at risk. Not just because they spend more time on the roads but also because their income depends on how quickly they make their deliveries or drop their passengers off.

According to a 2019 Straits Times report, the number of delivery riders getting into accidents has risen since 2016.

And with the surge in food delivery orders since the start of the circuit breaker, accidents, unfortunately, are bound to occur.

Food Delivery Rider Now In ICU Due to Accident; Family Appealing for Witnesses

A 25-year-old food delivery rider is in the intensive care unit (ICU) after getting into an accident along the East Coast Parkway (ECP) on Wednesday afternoon (17 June).

The man’s family is appealing for witnesses.

The rider, Muhammad Syahid Bin Supari, was unconscious when conveyed to Singapore General Hospital, police said.

In an interview with Shin Min Daily News, Syahid’s wife, Yani, said that her husband was making a delivery when the accident occurred on the ECP towards the city, after the Still Road South exit.

Yani said her husband lost control of his bike because the road was wet and skidded into a ditch by the side of the expressway.

“Some witnesses told me through Facebook that he was flung into the ditch and that the water level was above his neck,” she said.

“Fortunately, he was rescued in time, otherwise the consequences would be unimaginable.”

Yani says that her husband works “all day and all night”.

“As long as he can meet the needs of the children, we are very grateful,” she said.

“I didn’t expect such a thing to happen now and I don’t know what to do.”

Syahid’s brother-in-law has urged anyone with video footage or evidence of what happened to come forward to help with police investigations.

Road Safety Tips For The Rainy Season

It’s been raining a lot lately, and wet roads spell danger for distracted motorists.

As you know, riding on wet roads is more hazardous because it’s easier to slide out on slicker surfaces.

That’s why it pays to be extra cautious in such circumstances.

Here are some road safety tips for the rainy season:

  • Switch on your headlights – visibility is key, especially when it’s raining
  • Go slow – this is the most important thing to do on wet roads. According to Yahoo News, it only takes a slightly wet road and a speed below 50 kilometres for hydroplaning (sliding out of control on a wet road) to occur
  • Maintain a larger distance from other motorists – this will help you avoid collisions on slippery roads
  • Stay alert – don’t give in to distractions, such as a text on your phone
  • Pullover to the side if necessary – If the rain is too strong or the road too wet, pull over to the side and wait for things to clear up.
