In Singapore, where delivery services are as common as bubble tea stalls in a shopping centre, a recent incident in Yishun has left residents pondering: Is it reasonable to check your parcel before signing for it? A deliveryman in Yishun thinks it’s not, and this disagreement led to tempers flaring and punches thrown.
Here’s the full package of what happened.
Deliveryman Punched Yishun Resident Following Heated Argument Over Checking of Package
The incident occurred around 2 pm on Thursday (3 August), at Blk 821 along Yishun Street 81.
34-year-old Mr Hong, who’s self-employed, told Shin Min Daily News that he was taking a nap at home when he was awakened by the deliveryman who came to deliver the goods.
“He said he was delivering a package to my mother, and she must sign for them,” he explained.
I don’t know what’s more shocking: an elderly buying things online (presumably), or that someone is forced to sign for a parcel.
Mr Hong’s mother was not at home at the time, and she did not answer his call.
“I asked him if I could check the package first, and he said no. So I had to ask him to come back later to deliver the goods,” Mr Hong recounted.
He said that the deliveryman seemed very impatient after hearing this and even cursed a few times.
Mr Hong, who was awakened from his peaceful slumber and then cursed at, was displeased. He opened the door and said to the deliveryman, “I’ve spoken to you nicely, so don’t curse me.”
The deliveryman then approached him menacingly, which Mr Hong described as “close enough that if he moved any further, he would bump into me.”
Mr Hong claimed that he “instinctively” pushed the man, who immediately retaliated by punching him in the face three times.
Mr Hong quickly subdued the man, who then stopped hitting him. “He was very strong, taller and bigger than me. After being beaten, my head ached all day.”
The Aftermath
An infuriated Mr Hong immediately called the police. The deliveryman quickly fled the scene, but Mr Hong managed to take a photo of the truck he was driving.
The police confirmed the case, stating that they received a report of an assault at the aforementioned date, time, and location, adding another layer to Yishun’s already spicy reputation.
Mr Hong has sustained minor injuries but refused to be taken to the hospital,
