A 34-year-old woman in China has died after falling from the 11th floor of a hospital following a botched wisdom tooth extraction that left her in severe pain for days.

Wrong Tooth Extraction Leads to Unbearable Pain

The woman, surnamed Wu, from Anhui province in eastern China, visited Anqing Municipal Hospital on 12 Mar 2025 for a wisdom tooth extraction.

During the procedure, doctors mistakenly removed a healthy tooth instead of the wisdom tooth.

According to Wu’s brother, doctors then forcibly reinserted the wrongly extracted tooth and secured it with wire, tying it to several other teeth.

“For an hour and a half of the surgery, they did not use anaesthesia, and my sister endured it,” Wu’s brother told Jimu News.

An X-ray from a second hospital later revealed that anaesthetic had been injected into the wisdom tooth but not into the tooth that was wrongfully extracted.

The dental error left Wu with damaged teeth, facial swelling, and pain so severe she could barely eat.

Her brother said she was only able to drink water for days following the procedure.

Wu shared a tearful video on Douyin under the username “逆风飞翔” documenting her painful experience.

Hospital Rooftop Fall After Failed Resolution Attempts

On 17 Mar 2025, Wu returned to Anqing Municipal Hospital to negotiate the matter after reportedly being asked to remove her complaints.

Before her fall, Wu recorded one final statement on the Chinese social media platform Douyin.

“No one addressed this incident. The hospital lied to me from start to finish, causing me immense suffering. Who will save me? Because of the harm this hospital caused, I will die here,” Wu said in the video.

“I am 34, and you put me in this situation, who is going to save me?” she added.

“You deceived me from the very beginning. Thanks to the harm caused by this hospital, I will die here today.”

Wu then fell from the 11th floor of the hospital.

Police have ruled out criminal charges in connection with her death, according to China Newsweek.

A relative of Wu stated that she had been in good physical and mental health before the incident.

“Wu had repeatedly reported the issue to the hospital and authorities, but nothing was done. This broke her psychological defences, and she said she would use death to prove her innocence,” the relative explained.

Investigation and Aftermath

The hospital, founded in 1938 and known for its dental department, offered Wu’s family 100,000 yuan (S$18,810) in compensation, which they rejected.

The family has demanded to see surveillance footage of the rooftop incident.

Hospital staff confirmed that the doctor involved has been suspended and that both the health commission and police are investigating the matter.

A dentist not connected to the case commented that the wrong tooth extraction resulted from an error in judgment, which is rare and qualifies as a medical accident.

Lawyer Zhu Xue from Beijing Celue Law Firm said that if the doctor is found responsible for the medical accident, the hospital would be liable for civil compensation and could face administrative penalties.

According to Sin Chew, a Chinese media outlet reported that Wu’s family and the hospital later reached common ground through negotiation, and the family deleted all their public statements about the incident.

The story has gained significant attention on mainland Chinese social media, accumulating more than 100 million views.
