Little did you know (or I, at least – I live under a rock) that there are discount stores other than Don Don Donki and Daiso.

Some comparable in scale; some much cosier and manageable.

I know, we barely have enough time to take in everything at those renowned Japanese retail giants – but it’s only fair we pay their competitors a visit too, right?

So, here you go: eleven discount stores in Singapore whose names don’t start with a ‘D’.

Tokutokuya

Normally, if the items I’m browsing at a store aren’t labelled with price tags, I’d either be intimidated (due to poverty) or annoyed by the inconvenience.

In Tokutokuya, unlabelled items are precisely what you’re looking for. Unless stated otherwise, everything is priced at S$2 by default.

Despite its unassuming facade in the basement of Suntec City, the brand offers products that are as intriguing as those in the Don Don Donki empire.

Kitchen tools, cosmetics, stationery, decorations – you name it, they have it.

Plus, be assured about the quality – Tokutokuya imports almost all their stock from Japan.

  • Address: North Wing #B1-150, Suntec City, 3E Temasek Blvd, Singapore 038984
  • Business hours: 10AM – 10PM, Monday to Friday
  • Contact number: 6747 4447

2WO

In contrast to its often sprawling contemporaries, 2WO operates a pop-up store concept that is relatively modest in terms of square footage.

But, if you’re familiar with the stacking skills of these retailers, you’d know better than to underestimate their capacity.

For instance, you can find amazing substitutes for those pricey MUJI acrylic storage units at 2WO. Like most everything in the store, it’s only S$2!

Apart from that, there are some pretty unique instant noodles, such as these rare Nissin flavours at S$3.

They used to have an outlet at Liang Court but as we all know, Liang Court’s been closed for redevelopment.

This doesn’t mean 2WO has disappeared as it has an online store which will deliver your purchases for an S$8 fee. You can also self-collect at their Pasir Panjang Head Office.

Miniso

Most shoppers are no stranger to Miniso: the franchise can be spotted in numerous major shopping malls.

In particular, the Harbourfront Centre and IMM outlets sell everything for S$2, adopting a pricing strategy populated by fellow competitor Daiso.

The low-cost retail carries a wide variety of cosmetic products, adorable plush toys, gadgets and more.

Though controversies regarding the brand’s origin are unceasing, just know that it is officially registered as a Chinese company and shop away.

Mijyi

Mijyi boasts imported goods not only from its home country Japan but also Taiwan, Korea, Thailand and America.

Two extensive outlets house its array of snacks, household items, cosmetic products and more, priced universally at S$2.

But, if you’re lucky enough to encounter one of their sales, prices could drop by half.

As if we aren’t already buying more than we need under the illusion of two-dollar frugality, eh?

Mega Discount Store

This one’s slightly different than the rest; it doesn’t tout common buys that will barely make a dent in your savings.

Instead, Mega Discount Store trade electronics like smart TVs, refrigerators and sound systems at competitive prices.

True to its name, it frequently has promotions with up to 50% discount on more than 2,000 selections.

On top of that, simply spend a minimum of S$300 and you’ll be entitled to free delivery.

Japan Home

You’ve passed it by, you’ve experienced its allure, you’ve most certainly at least browsed its cluttered shelves once – Japan Home is everywhere. It is so prevalent that if I were to list the addresses of all its outlets, it would qualify as a separate article.

As if that wasn’t enough, you can also shop the Japan Home catalogue on Qoo10.

Get appliances, electronics and storage units delivered to your doorstep for free when you spend S$100 and above.

Value Dollar

Another retail chain that is almost ubiquitous, Value Dollar provides daily essentials, such as toothpaste and shampoos, at bargain prices.

There is also an impressive assortment of snacks and beverages at equally impressive low prices.

It is my go-to place for guilty pleasures that, albeit sinful to my body, at least won’t be a crime to my wallet.

Feel free to overwhelm your baskets while you navigate the treacherously narrow aisles. The absurdly long receipt is still going to end with a reasonable sum.

Mixcart

Mixcart offers fashion accessories, household items, random gadgets and even ointments – all packed somewhat chaotically into a moderately-sized property.

The products may be less exciting and exotic, but rummage deep enough and you could uncover gems for as low as S$1.

Besides luring people to its Geylang storefront with the promise of low prices, Mixcart also entices online shoppers through Lazada, Shopee and Qoo10.

  • Address: 547 Geylang Rd, Singapore 389502
  • Business hours: 11AM – 11PM, Mon to Sun
  • Contact number: 9875 9380

Nomi Japan

Nomi Japan is cheap, and they want you to know it.

Patrons are greeted by unmissable red overhead banners that serve both as a store directory and a storewide price tag.

Similar to most other Japanese discount stores, Nomi Japan encompasses a mind-boggling range of products.

Their outlets in Marina Square and NorthPoint City will take care of all your fashion, home, recreational and travel needs at a humble price of S$2.

  • Address: #02-219A, Marina Square, 6 Raffles Blvd, Singapore 039594
  • Address: #B1-106 NorthPoint City South Wing, Singapore 769098
  • Business hours: 10AM – 10PM, Mon to Thu; 10AM – 10.30PM, Fri to Sun
  • Contact number: 8202 4950

OneDollarOnly Store

OneDollarOnly maintains an exclusively online presence. Despite its name, not all goods share the S$1 price tag.

It primarily promotes stationery for gifting purposes and targets wholesale orders.

If you have an upcoming party and are scratching your head to come up with a door gift, the site could serve up some inspiration.

Standard shipping, which takes 3-5 working days, is free for purchases above S$70. Otherwise, a flat rate of S$7 will be imposed.

For orders above S$100, you have the option of express delivery, which shortens shipping time to less than 48 hours excluding public holidays.

Alternatively, hit the S$35 threshold and pick up your items at their Woodlands warehouse.

  • Address: Woodlands Horizon, 31 Woodlands Close #03-16, Singapore 737855
  • Business hours: 9AM – 5PM, Mon to Fri
  • Contact number: 6747 4447
